We caught up with the brilliant and insightful NX Blame a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi NX, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned how to make music over time. As a teen, I had an English instructor who gave me the idea to create music. During her poetry unit, she suggested I make music instead. She gave me a composition notebook and told me to write her music inside that notebook daily. I learned how to make music as I created it, and it was an amazing experience to learn from my peers. There is no way that I could have learned to make music quickly. My music is as good as it is today because I have worked at it. However, I think that the skill of learning how to take constructive criticism is very important. Without other people’s opinions, I would not have been able to put out work that not only I enjoy. I also would not have made music others enjoy as well. I believe that nothing stood in my way of learning how to make better music because I am open to learning from the people around me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nx Blame and I am a Rap artist from Kansas City Missouri. I got into making music as a teenager and I have learned how to make music by consistently working on my craft, and by learning from others. I create music in the genre of Rap. I think that my sound and my versatility sets me apart from others because it has a dark and grungy feel to it. I would often sing a lot in my songs because I think that it would convey more emotion to how I am feeling at that moment. I am most proud of the work that I have done with others such as Wothers because he is not located in the United States. However, we are constantly working together on projects and I think that we work well together and that our styles of music complement each other well. For future collaborations, I would just like to create more music with my peers.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
There is no goal or mission driving my creative journey I am creating music because it was a dream of mine and it was something that I have always wanted to do. I think that being able to love what you do is important because you will have passion for it and you would want to create. Personally, I enjoy writing and I enjoy my writing process. During my writing process, I will take notes as I go on a walk and really take note of the things around me and then put it into my music.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing that comes with being an artist is how happy my work makes others feel. I enjoy it when I put my work out there and people connect with my music, and I love when it makes them happy or inspired to create. This is what makes me want to create more music. I also enjoy it when people leave comments in the comment section of my songs because it gives me a chance to respond to each comment and connect with the people who are listening.
