We recently connected with NUNNABOVE and have shared our conversation below.
NUNNABOVE, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
We have been playing together professionally for about 9 years. We’re getting to the point now where our performances are starting to pay for some of the band’s expenses. Prior to that our parents were the primary funding source for the band. We started out playing for $100, $200, $500. Just accepting what was offered. After 9 years of playing bigger venues around the Twin-Cities, and appearing on AGT, we’re getting gigs that cover our cost of doing the gig.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
We started taking music lessons when we were ages 3 and 4 (girls), and 7 and 9 (boys). We played recitals together for many year until we met our producer Karl Demer. Soon after than, we auditioned for America’s Got Talent and got on. It was an eye-opening experience. We got to see a lot of people who payed a long time to get there, and it took us a couple of years. When we looked around, it dawned on us that the majority of the people there were much older or had been performing much longer than us. One of the things we learned from that experience was that the stage we performed on didn’t matter. The audience mattered. The stage, with the lights and the cameras and all the stuff was something that was going to change, but the audience wasn’t. The audience would always be there wanting to hear the music that we could play. We realized then that the audience was what mattered and we wanted to play to that. It was all about the audience.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
For us, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is simply have a vehicle for expression. We have been very blessed to have always had a creative outlet. On top of music, we also do animation.. Bob’s World is a story our youngest brother came up with and he just taught himself to animate, and over the past couple of years, has produced 3 episodes (as of Nov. 4). NUNNABOVE does the music for the shows. It’s great having another vehicle for our music. It reaches more people.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In our view, society can best support artists by being curious. That includes being open to different styles and mediums of art. If the audience is curious and open, then they’ll hear a variety of music and hear that music get better. The same goes with visual art and other styles. When audiences aren’t curious, they’ll see the same old thing.,
