We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nubia Soul Goddess a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nubia, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
Although I am the Creative Director of my Publishing House, I’m also an author. Last year I decided to start working on the audio version of one of my books. However, I decided to release it (initially) on my Youtube book channel. Most authors look to release their audiobooks on Audible which is an Amazon company, but I wanted to do it differently for a number of reasons.
#1 – Quicker to monetize for all parties involved
#2 – Bigger payout possibilities for all parties involved
#3 – Larger reach than Amazon without all the stipulations (if you’ve ever published through Amazon, you understand what I’m talking about.)
#4 – It’s FREE for listeners whether they subscribe or not, all they have to do is hit play
It was a “test” run, and the results were better than I expected for no marketing or promotion of it, which let me know that this is another (and possibly better) option for authors to release audio books on for their fans to partake of. So now, I am in the process of having the rest of the book(s) narrated to roll out via Youtube as audiobooks.
From this trial & error process of my own works, I have also created an entire team dedicated for the the sole purpose of audiobooks for other authors! This team is staffed with 2 industry professionals in audio engineering from one of the top music schools in the industry, along with 2 professional voiceover actors (male and female).
There are a number of other audiobook platforms out there but nothing is like Youtube and that is where I intend to direct all of my authors (published or consulted) to deliver their audibooks, as Youtube serves a number of purposes that benefit the author and others in a more beneficial way.
Nubia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Nubia Soul Goddess, an International Music Artist, Amazon Bestselling Author, Actress, and Publisher. I have been in entertainment for a decade now as of this year and it all started with me being a musician and loving music and the ability to express and create at a young age.
My publishing company, GNectar Publishing, received its’ trademark last year and we are ecstatic about that! We offer consultations, publishing services as a whole or ala carte, content creation for authors such as social media posts/reels, narration services, and soon we will have publishing classes for those looking to learn the process for themselves to become publishers themselves.
The biggest problem we solve for clients is the answer to the question, “How?”
What I have come to understand for many is that they often don’t know the process of things and that’s why they either don’t do what they desire or delay it for years. They don’t know the first thing to look for an often times they spend money on masterclasses with people who charge them hundreds of dollars for motivational phonecalls but no real meat of what they are actually seeking information on.
This is where I come in. I give it to them straight with additional resources outside of myself and my company, so they can see for themselves that they can do this and that no one should be kept from knowledge that can help them expand their lives!
I’m most proud of the people I help that come back for additional consultation sessions as they move further into their lanes of their careers. It means a lot to me because it says they valued the information that I showed them prior, used it, got a return on it, and they trust me to help them move even further along with their project/career.
Although my company is very small and is still going through changes of growth and making it’s stamp in the local, national and international community; my goals are the same – “help those create something amazing that they can be proud of, and to turn on those creative thinking juices to make them want to achieve more…”
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I am currently completing my degree in Entertainment Business Management, a very inclusive degree that covers all sectors of entertainment from music, books, publishing, television, film, etc.; March 2024 is my last class and it has been one hell of a journey!
The school I’m attending includes MacBooks for all students, so I started during the pandemic in 2020, I also received a small loan that year for my publishing business. So I took that money and invested in a business lawyer who made sure my business paperwork was registered correctly and filed for my trademark.
I know there are those who will say, you could have done that yourself. True, but because I am not versed in legal language and tax laws change every year, I didn’t want to take the chance and misunderstand any of the paperwork to complete those things. So I invested in my business the best way I knew and that was to hire another professional who was experienced and knew exactly what I needed to ensure my trademark was submitted correctly and without errors.
I use my Macbook for homework and for creating my website(s) and content for marketing and promotion purposes. My assignments in school are all centered around my business so it’s literally the blueprint in my assignments. Knowing that at the end of the degree I have the ability to download everything I have ever submitted is also a plus for me, because it’s my basically my business blueprint.
That is how I started.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
You can’t control us, we aren’t meant to be controlled, we aren’t meant to follow the masses. We are here to teach the masses. Allow us to be who we are and your life will always be better from what we do that you implement in your life. Everything around you was created by a creative, so please, respect us and what we do and what we charge for our time, experience and services. Whether we are self taught, professionally taught or a mixture of both, it takes a lot of guts to stand apart from the masses on something you created.
