Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Novella Cooper. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Novella, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
It all started with a passion. I loved drawing ever since I was a kid and wanted to learn more about it. The older I got the more I became obsessed with my hobby of drawing characters and cartoons that I decided I wanted to go to school for it. My education wasn’t that smooth with moving from one city to another and parents who didn’t understand the academic route. So, I had to teach myself a lot of things if I wanted a higher education. That only made me more independent. Now I am working on my BFA in drawing and illustration with a minor in creative writing.

Novella, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Novella Cooper, and I am a visual artist and writer. I specialize primarily in illustration and love writing fiction. I have created indie comics online and am currently working on my first fantasy book series. When I’m not working on my next art and/or writing project, I am cosplaying and love to express my creativity through fashion. I also love to sew and do ballet.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Definitely drawing. Once I entered art school, I had to erase all prior memory of what I knew and the habits I had created as an artist in order to better craft my skills. Art first I was anxious and worried about if I could not let go of those past habits. It takes patience, practice, and willing to open your mind up to new ideas that will help you make room for those new techniques as you grow.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I definitely wish I had more creative friends and was surrounded by people that could push me to my full potential.
