We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Notty Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Notty, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew pretty early on in life that I wanted to pursue the art of recording as an artist or radio personality.
I recorded my first song at 12 years old on my friend’s laptop and uploaded it to MySpace. From there I just never really let go of the feeling that expressing myself through words gave me.
I treat songwriting like a diary at times. So having a thought and then bringing it into the real world is amazing. From the lyrics, to selecting a beat, to arranging the beat to suit what I’m wanting to express, and recording the conversation I’m pretty much having with myself – it’s a process that’s easy to fall in love with and be excited about.
From there your imagination can really run wild from a mixing and editing perspective. Whether it’s selecting sounds or samples that help convey the message, adding vocal effects, or even choosing where to drop the beat out to add even more emphasis to parts of the song.
Performing those creations live adds another layer to it all. It’s a form of world building through word bending.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a recording artist and producer from Knoxville, TN. My catalog is heavily based in and inspired by hip-hop, with more subtle traces of melodic rap (or sing rapping) and R&B.
I’m most proud of being a Co-Founder of Purple Room Creative with t.ANT, which is an “idea hub” and multi-media company that specializes in the creative arts. Everything from artist management, creative direction and design, production, songwriting, and videography.
I’m also proud of owning the music that I release and being able to place it in arenas that appreciate what I do. Whether that’s soundtracks for Netflix and NBA2K21, The Overtime Elite Basketball League, or stages across the U.S. – I take pride in having an infrastructure for creativity and business in partnership with t.ANT that allows me to reach larger audiences.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best support for artists is always supporting artists! Whether that’s liking and sharing social media posts, engaging with and actively attending live shows, buying merchandise, and most importantly streaming and/or buying the music.
The artist and supporter relationship is critical because none of our favorite artists and musicians reach their pinnacles without the people who resonate with any creative output.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The best way to build an audience is to just be yourself and stay consistent. When you become known for providing quality in any space that you attempt to fill, that creates word of mouth.
From there more and more people will want to get a look for themselves and either take it or leave it. The more people that buy into and take what an artist is giving them, that allows a FOMO type of factor to continue to build.
It becomes cool to be apart of supporting what’s popular. Almost like a fashion statement in a way.
