We recently connected with NOTE and have shared our conversation below.
NOTE, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Both of my parents have been a huge influence on the person I am today. My moms has always encouraged me to be exactly who I am, whether she agreed with my choices or not. My pops instilled the principles of accountability and toughness that I carry with me. He is also the reason I fell in love with music. He exposed me to a wide variety of artists and genres that I would have never discovered on my own. This is the biggest reason I’ve been able to collaborate with such a diverse group of producers and my creative peers.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is NOTE, which stands for “Nigga On The Edge”.
However, NOTE is not really a person, it’s a way of life. Everything I do in my personal and creative lives, is not the norm. I’m always looking at, and implementing fresh perspectives in order to avoid stagnation. Personally, this affects everything from my relationships to my sense of humor.
Creatively, I call my genre of music, “Space Age Gangsta Shit”…which is a combination of my melodic vocals on top of mellowed out, bass heavy beats and soundscapes. My definition of “gangsta”, is anyone who lives life on their terms, and not necessarily what society deems as the norm.
I started my company, Notozone Media LLC, with the slogan “All Things Entertainment”, as an avenue to release my work to the public through audio, visual, and performance media.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I tell people all the time, songs are essentially wizardry/magic. As a songwriter, the ability to write(conjer something out of thin air that didn’t previously exist) that has the potential power to change someone’s mood or disposition, even if only for a few minutes, is a special gift that I never take for granted.
With that said, the most rewarding aspects are when someone tells me one of my songs has helped them or even changed them for the better. There are people walking around with NOTE tattoos on their bodies because of the impact my work and way of life have had on them.
Performing live is also a reward for me. Connecting and interacting in real life with folks while I’m on stage is my favorite thing to do in life.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Talent is one thing, and it definitely helps…but I feel it has been my professionalism and staying open minded when I collaborate with other creatives that has opened up most of those doors for me.
As far as my supporters, it has been my consistency in the style and quality of the sound that people have come to expect form me, and staying true to that formula.
