We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nosa BSB a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nosa, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I have worked on so far is my Fifth project “Year Of The Underdog” it represents everything i’ve been through on my journey as an artist. I started releasing music consistently in 2017 and since then I have elevated with each drop but I still felt like my talent was bigger than the recognition I was getting, despite being overlooked I kept working and honing my skills as a rapper. Since 2019 I took a break from releasing projects and focused more on singles and this really helped my brand. I haven’t released any project in 3 years because I wanted to make my next move my best and I definitely achieved that with this Mixtape.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I go by Nosa BSB, and i’m artistic by nature I like drawing, digital art and making music but music just happens to be what i’m most passionate about. I graduated college with a degree in Interior Design but I chose to stick with what I love the most. I got into music at a very early age, I was the last of 4 boys but I only stayed with my immediate elder brother during the period I discovered rap music. He had a desktop computer and he would always bribe me by letting me use it whenever he wanted to sneak out house when my parents were not around, I was always happy to take this bribe because he had video games and a ton of music videos saved on his desktop computer. That was the turning point for me because I would always watch all those videos and there was just something about hiphop that I loved so much, I still haven’t figured it out till this day but it came like first nature to me. As time went on I noticed all my teachers in every literature class always loved the poems I wrote as assignments and that stuck with me, I would go on to writing poems for girls I liked and it was just an easier way for me to express myself, as time went on I graduated from poems to actually rapping on beats and would share my songs to all my friends who always thought they sounded good. That was how I found out what I really loved and since then I’ve held on to it through all the years. I never thought I would actually be a rapper, at first it was just a hobby but then I realized God doesn’t give anyone a talent for them not to use it, and that’s when I decided I was about to take it serious in 2017.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative for me is listening or looking at the finished product and realizing it will outlive me. I love that feeling so much because it’s a great way for me to channel my time into something productive, no matter where I am or what happens to me people will always be able to hear my voice and see my face through the art I am putting out during my time here on earth. To me this is the greatest reward an artist can ever get, it’s a priceless feeling even greater than getting paid and that’s funny coming from me because I love getting paid lol.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Well i’m not from the United States i’m Nigerian so coming here at first was a little challenging because of course I had a little accent, the culture is also way different so I literally had to reinvent myself Year after Year to get to the point I am right now. If I did afrobeats that would have been a different story but I am a Hip Hop artist so I had to make sure I was coming correct, My lingo had to be on point and I also had to sound like I belong and at the same time keep an original feel to my sound. Also, building connections was a little more difficult for me because I didn’t spend my whole life in the States and that meant I would automatically know fewer people than other rappers who have been down here their whole life. I come from a resilient continent so it wasn’t that difficult for me to find my way around, although it took me longer than I expected I feel like i’m currently very well rounded and ready for the world to find out about me.
