We were lucky to catch up with Norry Niven recently and have shared our conversation below.
Norry, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
As a commercial Director, the Super Bowl is an important stage where upon one likes to exhibit one’s work. During my long career, the Super Bowl commercials seem to be the ones by talk about the most. A few years back I got six commercials on the Super Bowl for the same client. that client happened to be Fox, the network where the Super Bowl was being broadcast. So I had a 60 second. Commercial for the TV show 24. We filmed in London and the commercial was designed to be one continuous take, that also included gunshots explosions, car fires, extras and a Double Decker Bus.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Throughout my career as a commercial and film director I’ve always maintained a quality of work where people take notice, they enjoy having a voice on screen….even if it’s a voice inside a commercial, promo, music video, film or documentary. That effort is always rewarded.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a filmmaker is the audience experience. Seeing them change or being moved….that’s why we do it.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was often shooting 10 to 20,000 feet of film per day…..and the transition to digital cinema was almost overnight. Our entire industry was changed….and in my opinion, it became better, more available, easier for artists to grow and garner experience. Plus I spend more time shooting and less time reloading…although that was nice too.
