We were lucky to catch up with Norf Sole recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Norf thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on has to be my most recent project, “Around the Time of Sunset”. I believe that because it was created in a space of great change, uncertainty, determination, and growth. All of which forced me into a crazy mode. I was able to take those feelings and apply it to the music. This was a time that I can only thank God for because it made me a better person. A more independent person. A more self-loving person. This was one of the most beautiful times which birthed “Around the Time of Sunset”.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
As a kid, like many of us, I’ve always enjoyed music. I would mimic some of my favorite artists and pretend I’m performing their art. I always wanted to make my own but was nervous and never had the right amount of confidence to step foot into that lane. That’s until I met somebody who was my age and could rap crazy. Homie would just rap all day, nonstop. So I wanted to do it like he did it. That’s where I wrote my first song in 5th grade, which was terrible. What sets me apart from others, in my opinion, is my honesty and acceptance of self. In these times it’s hard to be yourself when you have judgments all around, so you end up trying to be something or someone. Stop being too cool for yourself and embrace yourself. That was one thing I had to learn.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think there are a lot of artists today. Everyone makes music. In my opinion I think society should be more open to other styles of music, rap specifically. Give people chances and don’t judge beforehand.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding is seeing the outcome and reviews. Art is scary to put out in the world because it’s full of judgment. You may work on a project for months and as you work on it, you grow attached to it. So as you love the work you’ve done, putting it out may be the most stressful because not everyone will view your art how you do.
