We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Norberto Perez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Norberto below.
Norberto , appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Practice lots of practice. Behind every illustration and painting there are hundreds of bad drawings done before. Over the years I built the skills needed to create images.
I also really enjoy collecting books from illustrators and artists that provide me some insight on how they approached their subjects. If I read something that seems interesting I try to integrate parts of the process to my own work.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I do a variety of things, from painting from life to illustrating fiction. My Images are created using traditional materials to have spontaneity in my mark-making that I enjoy seeing. I continue to paint and draw from life which Is one of my greatest assets built over the years. Using what I explore from life I use later on in my illustrations to create scenes that feel believable. I’m excited to continue to experience more of the world through painting and see what new stories I can bring to life visually.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I would say exploration and making pictures is what keeps me going.
There are always subjects, settings, people and stories that are waiting to be discovered. In my everyday life I may come across a particular interaction or event that sparks an image in my mind. I keep my skills sharp in order to be able to record these moments of life truthfully and with the charm that made the image spark in my mind.
As long as I am seeing and living there will be stories to be captured in paint.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to bring attention to the beauty of subjects that may be often overlooked. Again referring back to being aware of moments in everyday life, being able to capture them feels fulfilling as it feels I am doing my part in leaving a mark.
Being able to share these moments in exhibits and to other eyes is just as rewarding.
