We were lucky to catch up with Noor Bahjat recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Noor , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve always loved observational drawing, and I used to use it to decorate my school desk. When I was 15 years old, I was drawing on my desk when the math teacher asked me a question that I couldn’t answer. He walked over to see what I was doing and was surprised by the excellent drawing. He then asked me, “Why are you studying math?” You have skill; why don’t you pursue fine arts studies? at that point i started considering fine arts
Noor , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My artworks not only reflect my personal experiences and perspectives but also shed light on the intricate tapestry of Syrian society, history, and culture. With unwavering determination, using my creativity to inspire change, promote dialogue, and challenge stereotypes.
Inspiration: A Reflection of Identity and Struggles
The inspirations behind my artworks are deeply rooted in my identities and lived experiences. I draw from the diverse cultural heritage of Syria, incorporating elements of traditional art, architecture, and symbolism into my creations. I use my art to convey messages of resilience, hope, and unity amid the backdrop of conflict and displacement that has marked Syria in recent years.
I exhibit a diverse range of artistic styles, mediums, and themes, reflecting the multifaceted nature of my experiences and perspectives.
Themes of displacement, identity, memory, and belonging are recurring motifs in my works. I explore the tension between preserving cultural heritage and adapting to new environments, all while fostering a sense of unity and shared humanity. Through my art,
My mission as a Syrian female artist extends beyond creating aesthetically pleasing works. I use my art as a tool for empowerment and advocacy, challenging stereotypes, humanizing the conflict and its impact on individuals, and inviting audiences around the world to empathize and connect.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Art is a journey of exploration and growth. The continual process of learning new techniques, experimenting with different styles, and expanding one’s artistic horizons can be incredibly fulfilling. There are many rewarding aspects of being an artist like
self-expression and Creating Something Tangible: Transforming a blank canvas into a work of art is a gratifying experience. The ability to see a physical representation of one’s creativity is incredibly rewarding.
also Art has the power to connect with people on a profound level. The feeling of knowing that your art resonates with others and communicates something meaningful to them can be incredibly fulfilling.
making art is therapy to me it helps me learn more about myself and heal
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The Little Prince” explores universal themes such as love, friendship, loneliness, imagination, and the pursuit of meaning. These themes resonate with readers of all ages and backgrounds, making the book relatable and thought-provoking.
the book contains profound philosophical and existential ideas. It encourages me to look beyond the surface and contemplate deeper meanings.
