Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nonye Unachukwu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nonye, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share a customer success story with us?
I would say I have a very good relationship with my customer who are now returning clients. I prioritise their work as first before any other thing, I take it as it’s mine and that has helped me a lot.
Nonye, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Nonye Unachukwu, a child of God assigned to the fashion industry. I didn’t Just go into it, God assigned me to do what I’m doing, to be a voice to my generation and generation to come. I have always loved fashion maybe because my mum is a fashionista so she made sure to train us up in that light, you must always look good .
So I have always been on the big side and because of my size, I got a lot of attention both negatively and positively. People would always say a big person can’t do this or do that and when I hear it I’m like no, we can do it and because of this I was in my cultural dance group in primary school, joined drama too, even joined the relay team in my junior secondary school as well played shot put in senior secondary school. Doing all of that was in a way to prove a point that been big isn’t a bad thing, you can be big and still make impact and most importantly look good. I hated seeing big people drag their feet or dress anyhow, I wanted them to realise how beautiful they are and how important they are to the society.
Fast forward to Uni, I used to model for my friend who is a make up artist and sometimes style my roommate, and the Holyspirit had told me that I was going to go into fashion but I didn’t have clarity then but I was seeing the signs, I even told some people about it and they laughed at me but I didn’t give up.
So one day during the holiday my eldest sister was like you have a good smile and body, why not use it to make money instead of just staying at home and I’m like not bad oh.
So then she used to work for a company that catered for fashion brands and she referred me for the job and they hired me, got paid 5k per shoot and after shooting with them , got a total of 20k which was heaven to me then 😂. I was happy and I used the money in school to pay for some course books and my project as well .
So after that I started making noise about it been a model and the rest they say is history.
So I’m a professional curvy model who loves fashion and I use my talent to showcase the beauty of every single outfit I wear. I also love restyling clothes and that birthed Restyling Monday where I show people different ways they can style an outfit and I post every Monday.
What sets me aside from every other person would be that I’m reliable, professional, consistent, I don’t give up easily and most importantly I have the spirit of God living inside of me.
I’m proud of how far God has brought me, it’s been 2 and half years in this business and I have seen growth and I’m only just starting, very excited of where God is taking me in this work.
I want my clients, followers, fans to know that I’m here to stay, they’ll keep getting good quality relatable content that will help them one way or the other
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
To be honest when I started I had nothing, no shoes because I hated heels, I had given my clothes out to people so when I came back to Lagos, all I had were house clothes. However I had people who believed so much in me, they saw my zeal and idea and bought into it
And because I had no experience, I didn’t have pictures to proof to any client so I borrowed my sister cloth, wig and a friend bought me a pair of black and a nude heel to support.
I went to the studio, took pictures and I started posting it as if it was a paid job and I sent it to clients as my portfolio.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
So getting myself a mini studio would show my act of resilience. When I have a shoot, I sometimes take extra clothes that I’ll use to create content so I can post on my page.
So after a year I had saved up a certain amount of money and because I wanted to enter content creation fully, I knew I had to have a space where I can use to create the content so I took all my savings and used it to get the small space, it was a huge step and I was skeptical about it I won’t lie but my mum said something, she said don’t think about now, think about the future. Close your eyes and sacrifice the money, it will make sense later one and now I can totally agree 😊
