We were lucky to catch up with Nony Clt recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nony, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
Before anything else, I’m a husband and a father. I like it to be known by any client I’m working with. As an immigrant and a child of immigrants I can’t express enough the importance of a present supporting, loving man in the household. In my art I try to showcase that same love and positivity in hopes that if my art is still on walls by the time my kids are grown, that they and all the public see a reflection of the unconditional love my wife and daughters taught me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been in this country for 22 years and when I got here I didn’t know any English nor was a legal immigrant so I confided in my art, but never knew it could be a source of income for me until I was 30. I was part of the craft beer boom in NC when it first started as a delivery driver and after delivering kegs for 5-6 years I noticed that most of the breweries and bottle shops I was delivering to were paying artists great money to do what they love, so in 2019 I took a chance on myself, used my network in the craft beer world to get a few walls, and with the support of my wife I’ve been able to make a career of what I love to do. I make sure no opportunity is taken for granted and bring in as much professionalism with great customer service to all my clients. I’m more than thankful for the life Charlotte has provided me with.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I’ve always been a big believer of you get out what you put in so I’ve always felt that reaching out to possible clients and networking with people as I work on a wall has blessed me with the most opportunities.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
“Exposure doesn’t pay bills”. Early on I had a lot of potential clients offer to pay with me getting exposure and at first I believed most of them and got burned pretty bad, but as you grow and meet good people in this business you learn to hold your value up and protect yourself with contracts and more.
