We were lucky to catch up with Nonso Emefo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nonso, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I think honestly I realized I wanted to pursue some sort of creative journey during my sophomore year of college. Pursuing a creative career was always up in the air because photography had become one of my passions around a year earlier. I was having a conversation with my girlfriend and we were discussing our future and the things we wanted to achieve. Around that time, I was constantly juggling the question of what should I do because I have always been a creative person I just didn’t know where I should hone my skills on. And even to this day I still do not know for certain what the future holds for me. She reassured me about my talents and how much she believed in my abilities to go out and truly pursue this photography thing and I think at that moment it kind of switched for me like yeah let’s truly get up and go get this done. She definitely played a huge part and now, I am trying to figure out the direction I need to go in, but I’m confident in becoming a creative in some way somehow.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nonso Emefo. I am a fashion and narrative photographer based in Atlanta, Georgia. I got into photography from always having a love for taking pictures. As a kid and even into my teenage years, I would always ask my family and friends to take my pictures whenever I felt like I looked good. My dad got me a camera my sophomore year of high school and eventually, I was able to get myself a new one my junior year which is when I truly started being more serious about the craft. Now in my junior year of college, I am starting to pick up some momentum in what I want to get done.
Within my photography, I strive to capture the natural beauty of all people. I push to challenge the mind of all those captured and those who witness the work at hand. I feel my compositions and attention to detail are what sets me apart from other photographers. Rather than getting the “it” picture, I try to get a collection of pictures that move people and tell the ultimate story of what is in front of the camera. That’s what I am most proud of honestly, just being able to bring all of my ideas into reality for the world to see.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, there are several reasons why being a creative is rewarding. The first one involves you being able to profit off something you love to do. I think being able to turn a hobby or passion into a profitable business is the best thing that could ever happen. It allows you to be yourself and love what you do every day. I think the second most rewarding thing is being able to bring your ideas and creations to life. Often times we think the most amazing things but struggle to communicate them to the world. When you are able to actually go out and create that in reality whichever way you are trying to, it brings you the ultimate sense of joy. People are able to feel and see and experience for themselves your great idea. I think those are the most rewarding things.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal in my creative journey is simply to create an experience for all those witnessing. I have many different ideas and stories I want to be able to convey to the world in different ways. I want people to look back and appreciate the work I have created. I want them to understand that I did not do it for fame or money, or any materialistic value. I did it because it is what I love to do. Right now it is hard to manage all of those ideas because they are firing all at once it seems, but once I am able to figure I want to do, the sky is the limit.
