We were lucky to catch up with Nono recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nono thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The story of my mission is pretty simple. I grew up the oldest in the household, wanting to be very successful and a role model for my younger siblings, cousins/community to look up to music as always been therapeutic and something I was good at. Once I found out, I was good enough to make money at it. It was a wrap.No pun intended. I grew up listening to a variety of artist Kanye West, Gucci Mane , Cris brown, J. Cole, Kendrick, Lamar, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne, G Herbo, Lil Durk the list goes on and on. They all gave me courage and belief that I could do the same thing. Tell my story through my music. My homies used to always pressure me to sing at talent shows and do rap solos and many other music, incline activities. Many life changing events have cause me to dedicate my life to music . I have dream of giving back to my family and city once I’m successful and giving kids who come from similar backgrounds hope. my mission is to change the world through my music.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I go by Nono and I’m a Rapper / Singer : Songwriter from the midwest. I grew up with a big family living with 7 people but , all together I got 12 sibling who know all my songs , They motivate me never give up. Since a kid I knew I was destined to be into the music industry. From freestyling for my friends to rapping my own lyrics over my favorite songs it wasn’t long until my surroundings and my self realized that I could take this dream to the next level. In late 2021 I dropped my first EP “ Welcome to Spidaworld : Volume 1 , In honor of my Friend who was killed that summer. Following Volume 1 , I Dropped Volume 2 in March. These two projects dramatically expanded my audience. It echoed the voice of a kid from the jungle going through the phases of grief , youth , Girls , Untrustworthyness , lack of faith and Believing. Mostly the Having fun as a young and turnt black boy in America. I’m mostly proud of putting together majority of my music videos by My camera man ( Isaias) my cousin Mark and myself..They might not of been the best quality but it showed the hunger we had. It’s gotten even more intense since.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Building my reputation took a lot of work, dedication and courage. A lot of times I would do shows with small amounts of people or even hundreds of people. Either way I made sure put myself in the music scene. Staying on top of dropping music and networking with other artists all from different backgrounds and a strong reputation in the music realm. I remember I would go on break at my job and not punch out just to sneak off and attend an open mic. I knew for a fact there would be a greater opportunity to network at open mic. It was a very risky but chasing dreams go hand in hand with taking risk
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I grew up with that I had to unlearn is “no new friends”. A lot of times growing up I’ always heard “ You don’t neee no new friends, that’s why you got brothers” Or “stay down with the people you came up with”. Sometimes that’s just not the case a lot of times you will part ways with the people who u came up with. Sometimes there are different roads and paths that you have to go by yourself , on those Roads you’ll meet new people. These strangers could potentially help grow your business, Share your song get you put on the radio or simply be a fresh positive vibe to be around. You always want to keep your day one around, but that does not mean you can’t make new friends.
