We recently connected with Nolan Brumbach and have shared our conversation below.
Nolan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The Crooked Rugs is the most meaningful project I have been a part of in my musical journey. I have played in many other bands throughout the years, back when I was a teen in Omaha, NE and through my college career and beyond in Fort Collins.
This project has been intense and on-going since we started moving back in August of 2019. We have gone through several phases of creation, the first being from August 2019 – March 2020. The band was writing and playing a lot, just trying to get our name our there. Then when covid hit we went into a concentrated writing and recording phases where we recorded of first two albums. It was only in August of 2021 that we all moved in together and since then we have entered yet another phase where we got back to playing shows every month and recording our third album, Tales of the Great Western Sky, which came out April 1st, 2022.
Now we are entering phase 4, where we are looking into more tours, new sounds, and so much more. Everyones heart and souls go into this project and it is really like a family.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The band came together in August 2019. I knew Jayce and Rex from CSU and we played in a variety of projects through college. Once Finn moved up he became our bass player. I moved into a house in September of 2019 and Jay happened to be our new roommate. Since then it has been full steam ahead.
For me music came early. My Grandpa worked in the record industry in the 60s and 70s, my dad worked in record store and went on tours with bands in his youth. I was given a guitar at 12 and found some friends to play with. I was also always around video camera and productions so I have always been drawn to the arts.
When I came to school at CSU I joined the local radio and got to know all the local bands, since then it is just about making friends and getting out into your community.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
We simply want to be a great band. The band you go to see and inspires you to go home and play guitar. Life is short, so how much can you record, produce, how much fun can you have, how many places can you go. That is the goal
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Seeing the smile on peoples faces and how the community inspires each other!
