We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nokkie Lipsey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nokkie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
When it comes to what works well in family businesses, it all boils down to three things: communication, trust, and teamwork. Communication is the foundation of any successful business, but in a family business, it’s even more critical. You need to be able to communicate openly and honestly with your family members to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts. Trust is equally essential. In a family business, you need to be able to trust your family members to have the best interests of the business at heart. This trust allows you to work together effectively and make decisions that benefit the business.
Finally, teamwork is vital to ensure that everyone is working towards the same goals and objectives. When family members work together, they can achieve great things and overcome any obstacle.
However, owning a family business can also come with its own set of challenges. One of the most significant pitfalls is the lack of work/life balance. It can be challenging to separate personal and professional life, especially when working with family members. To prevent burnout and maintain a healthy work-life balance, it’s essential to establish boundaries and create a supportive work environment.
Regarding your children joining the business, it’s important to remember that they must be passionate about the business and have a genuine interest in it. They need to understand the importance of hard work, dedication, and the impact their decisions can have on the business. Encouraging them to follow their passions and interests is equally important.
One of the most beautiful things about running a family business with your spouse is the opportunity to do something you love with someone you love. When you have a shared passion and vision, it creates a deep bond that goes beyond just working together. You become partners in every sense of the word, supporting each other through the ups and downs of the business. It’s a beautiful thing to witness and experience.
To sum it up, running a family business can be an incredibly rewarding experience. By focusing on communication, trust, and teamwork, you can overcome any obstacle and achieve great success. Remember to maintain a healthy work-life balance, and encourage your children to follow their passions. And if you have the opportunity to run a family business with your spouse, cherish it, because it’s a unique and beautiful journey that only a few get to experience. Keep pushing forward, and success will follow!

Nokkie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Our journey into the catering business was a natural progression from our shared passion for food and hospitality. We started hosting dinners and parties with locally sourced and organic ingredients, and soon found ourselves experimenting with new dishes from around the world. It was only a matter of time before we turned our passion into a business, and in 2010 we launched our first catering concept. Unfortunately, like many others, our business was forced to close due to the Covid pandemic in 2020. During this time, we took a step back and re-evaluated our goals.
It was a challenging time for us, but we realized that our love for food and hospitality was too strong to ignore. As the world slowly returned to normal, friends and family started reaching out to us for our catering services once again, and we quickly found ourselves back in the game. It was almost by accident that Kitchen Giant was born in 2023. Starting small with family and friends, we were able to build our reputation through word of mouth.
We are grateful for the opportunity to share our passion with others through our catering services. It is not just about the food for us; it is about creating memorable experiences for our clients and their guests.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Ron and I met in culinary school, and it was love at first sight. We bonded over our shared passion for food and hospitality, spending hours experimenting with different ingredients and cooking techniques. We both knew that we wanted to pursue a career in the culinary industry, and our shared passion only grew stronger as we learned and grew together.
As our relationship blossomed, so did our dream of owning our own business. We started hosting dinners and parties for our friends and family, always striving to create the most delicious and memorable meals possible. We quickly realized that we had a talent for catering and event planning, and decided to turn our passion into a business.
In 2010, we launched our first catering concept, and it was a huge success. Our clients loved our locally sourced, organic ingredients, and our personalized approach to menu planning. But more than anything, they loved the husband and wife team behind the business.
Through all the ups and downs, Ron and I have remained a strong and dedicated team. We work together to create amazing food and unforgettable events, always putting our clients first. Our love for each other and for our business is what drives us every day, and we couldn’t be happier with the life we’ve built together.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building our audience on social media was crucial to our success. We started by creating a strong brand identity that resonated with our target audience and developed a content strategy that aligned with our brand values and mission.
Our advice for those just starting to build their social media presence is to be consistent, authentic, and engaging. Consistency is key when it comes to building a loyal following, so create a content calendar and stick to it. Be authentic and transparent with your audience, share your story, and show the human side of your business. Engage with your followers, respond to comments and messages, and participate in relevant conversations within your industry.
Additionally, we found that partnering with influencers and other businesses in our industry helped us reach a wider audience and build credibility. Don’t be afraid to collaborate and share the love on social media.
Remember, building a social media presence takes time and patience. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results right away. Stay true to your brand and keep creating content that resonates with your audience.
