We recently connected with Nohemi Munoz and have shared our conversation below.
Nohemi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
When I was starting because I was so new I had never experienced getting an sd card “corrupted”. A sweet family I knew wanted to support my dreams as a photographer and hired me for their family pictures, I was so excited. The views and outfits were everything I could dream of, they day after as i’m transferring them to my laptop a message pops up saying “cannot read sd card” I didn’t panick because I thought “maybe I can just remove it” well I removed it like 15 times and turns out my SD card had been corrupted and every picture had been deleted and there was no way of getting it back. I panicked, I had come up with a million ways to tell them but I was just so nervous and scared. I emailed her saying if I can meet her in person (we both work pretty close to each other” she accepted to see me and I told her the devastating news- she was the most sweetest and so comprehensive. We redid them and I now switch my SD cards continuously because I get so scared that it will happen again.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi! I am Nohemi, a photographer from the Black Hills SD. I grew up in Keystone, SD but shortly moved to Mexico, where I finished middle school & High school.
Eventually I ended up moving to Hill City, SD
I have always loved taking pictures, even if it was with my phone, I would always offer to go take pictures of my friends when we were in high school. Eventually I bought my cousins camera for $500 , I asked all my friends if I could practice some senior portraits with them and they let me. I wanted to do more but no one would really reach out, I then moved to Rapid City where I met more people so for me that meant I could keep practicing. I started posting more on social media (instagram). Even though no one was paying me I had faith that maybe one day I would get an inquiry. After a while I kept posting and eventually people started booking, I was really happy. I didn’t even care if it was one booking per month I was just so excited. I started to listen to photography podcast I don’t really remember who it was but they had talked about how even if you’re really not where you want to be you should be proud of the pictures you are taking and that really encouraged me to keep going. I started doing reels and making fun post- even if I would repeat pictures I still wanted to post something for people to see. You never know who’s going to find you through a certain post.
I ended up upgrading my camera and learning a lot about manual settings. I learned a little more about what style of editing I love and what style of editing I don’t really like at all. I love shooting senior portraits, couples pictures, friends, branding and family pictures!
I am so so grateful and can proudly say I booked out for the summer 2025, I had never imagined those words coming from me, I am currently still learning and will continue to learn but I do know I have prayed about getting clients for the longest and I am living an answered prayer. The best thing about it is all my clients have been the sweetest, they are always so encouraging and supportive of what I do.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth! Treat your clients like the humans they are, don’t just treat them like robots. I can’t thank my clients enough for recommending me . I love hearing “I booked you because …” “recommended you!”
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
We follow each other on social media and we go back and forth every once in a while with responding story’s
