We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Noemi Katan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Noemi, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Yes, I am a happy entrepreneur, it is hard and it represent a lot of work, and sometimes not so fun, but you do you all the time .
Many times I wonder if I made the right decision. Many times I think if going back to my career is an option. Because I really like my profession but I also really enjoy what I do now. I enjoy to able to make my own decisions at my own pace.
It is more difficult to be bussines owner but it also has so many rewards.
Noemi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an architect and a creative, proud mother of two.
My greatest passion is design and the process of creation itself.
The design and creation of jewelry pieces was my hobby for a long time, but little by little I was invaded by that unique need to create something new every day.
My career allowed me to create but not as often or with as many possibilities. With the design of woven necklaces and bracelets, I have the possibility of combining different colors, materials, shapes, and styles with thousands of options each. The possibilities are endless and that inspires me a lot.
I basically work with cotton thread to which I weave natural stones, wood, glass, metal, etc. My style is mostly bohemian and hippie. Many times I combine leather and chains to make different and more dynamic models.
All my pieces are really light, unique, and different, not only from each other, but you will never find a piece like mine in the common market.
They are all handmade, one by one with a lot of love and dedication. I sell what I do because I love it, not the other way around.
My next collection will be with recycled materials from old necklaces that I have been collecting on trips and street markets.
My catalog is mainly on my Instagram account and I already have some pieces in my Amazon Handmade store. I regularly participate in bazaars of creators and artisans.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being creative is the possibility of create something totally unique every day, and that is something that very few people are capable of doing.
I am also very rewarded by the response I receive from my clients and friends. It is seeing my passion represented in beautiful objects that make the person who uses them very happy.
Many times my friends who are far away text me when they use one of my pieces. Because just by seeing it they remember me or the moment we shared when I gave it to them.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Many times I feel that it is difficult for others to understand my journey.
I often see a shape or a material or a color and that opens thousands of possibilities for me to do something new and until I do it I can’t stop thinking about it.
Sometimes I think it’s hard to be like this because you get bored easily trying to do a normal or repetitive job.
