We were lucky to catch up with Noemi Blig recently and have shared our conversation below.
Noemi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career.
As a scholar, I am researching the evolution of American education from colonial times to the present day. Despite the advances in technology, our educational system still has many gaps, mainly in the area of individualized learning. Educating a child is not a one-size-fits-all approach because many factors affect student comprehension, i.e. environment, access to resources, history, background, etc. I am committed to producing quality research that will help educational institutions better their programs and reach all students. I look forward to offering quality tools for institutions to successfully implement and better their programs. I believe all students should feel motivated to learn and confident that they will be successful. This begins with their institution.
Noemi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My undergraduate, graduate, and now doctoral-level studies all center on the field of education. I started out as a 6th-grade teacher and soon found my niche in the role of educational leadership. I currently serve as an Academic Director, giving input into curriculum development and leading professional development sessions. I enjoy networking with local universities to see how we can best prepare our high school students who aspire to transition into college. I have also begun working towards an educational consulting business, Blig Consulting. With this launch, I hope to be able to reach individuals across the nation. I’m currently working on the official website launch, in addition to my video channel and written content.
Any advice for managing a team?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned thus far in regard to managing a team is to recognize that more than a manager, I am a leader. An effective leader knows how to serve. This mindset has helped me level with my team, recognizing that every member is just as important as the leader. It creates morale because it’s not a top-down approach. A leader is always necessary in order for a group to be effective. But true leader recognizes that they are just as much a servant as the rest of the team.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
My current readings relate to leading and managing in the field of education. Professionally, I read a lot from Marzano. My inspiration for my leadership model has been Biblical Leadership by Ken Collier and Matt Williams and The Conviction to Lead by Albert Mohler.
