We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Noelle Cameron a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Noelle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
What my parents did right, is what they did wrong — specifically my mother, because my father died when I was young. My mother did not treat me with kindness the way we are told mothers are suppose to do. Don’t get me wrong, she believed in me and in my dreams, but she would rather dedicate money to sports rather than my passion for acting growing up.
Our relationship affected me greatly, to the point where I was diagnosed with C-PTSD. It’s been a journey. It’s been a lot of reparenting, holding my own hand, but in a way, it’s given me a lot of grit and really thick skin for the acting world.
Noelle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Since I was a child, I have always wanted to be front and center. I found myself in acting for as long as I can remember, Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight really grabbed my attention & then Phantom of the Opera — a little strange for a kid to be watching, I know.
I started in grade school theatre then did some theatre and college & found my way into film. I started scouring Facebook calls for unpaid projects to get my reel going. This was in 2017. Then in 2o20, I booked my first paid gig. Since then, I haven’t done any unpaid work.
I love being a storyteller, I love being a conduit for the audiences — to show them parts of themselves that they didn’t want to face. It’s like therapy in a way.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During 2020, my mother died. I became an orphan — at 21. At this point, my mother had ostracized me from a lot of my family so I basically had no contact with anyone. I didn’t know who to reach out to & I didnt know how to start. I inherited her house. She was a hoarder. I have to clean it out & sell it. Luckily, my brother is a real estate agent and helped me — he is amazing.
Then not even a year later, I go through this horrible breakup, lose a bunch of mutual friends, get into a car wreck, have to find a car, move out of a house & pack up all of my things, & find a new place to live, while driving to my first SAG role.
We have a yearly trend. I’m actually having to help organise my grandmother’s hospice care.
It’s difficult. It feels like a set back each time, but I try to remember that somehow, someway there is a lesson or a sign hidden in this.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
There is no clear cut way to “success”. The only shared factor is never giving up. There aren’t any paved roads for us to go down as actors or creatives that will get to where we want. We have to find our own path amungst the brush– decide which thorns we are willing to take or not. And it takes everything we have.
