Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Noé Piña. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Noé thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
As a first generation American, growing up in Los Angeles and living some time in Mexico next to a brick manufacturing yard, my interest is on the concept of balance, using bricks as one of my main materials. I’m interested in my work evoking a contemplation of tension, while also arousing a sense of playfulness. Through my personal trials and observations of how systems, from socio-economic to political and natural- rise and fall.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
my interest lies heavily on the idea of balance. I’m interested in my work evoking a sense of tension, while also arousing a sense of humor and playfulness.
Through my observations of local to global systems, I am drawn to how these systems are built and eventually collapse, leading me to question the forces at play that create balance.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Why do some systems outperform others? What are the correlations? How are communities affected? This focus on the intricate balance within our city’s socioeconomic culture guides my art practice.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My work is currently preoccupied with sculpture, derived through studies on paper and writing, and extended into installations, paintings, and prints. New work is developed through colors, structures, materials and objects found in construction sites, like bricks and nails.
