We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful NoChillSaint. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with NoChillSaint below.
NoChillSaint, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
All throughout my life I feel as though I have been misunderstood by people I came in contact with. Being misunderstood about my name was a challenge because my legal first name is “Jesus” and I pronounce it as “Geez-us” (like in the bible), so just imagine being 4 years old and being called a liar by adults for something you had no control over. Children are impressionable as well, so when they saw adults making a big deal about my name or accusing me of lying they mimicked the behavior. I just chalked it up to human nature and those experiences helped mold me into the person I am today. I was also misunderstood from a very young age because I wasn’t able to form sentences properly. I was a very advanced child. I remember the story my uncle and my mom told me about me changing the VHS player back to “The Lion King” (after my uncle had changed it from The Lion King to Sunday Night Football) when I was 1 year old. I had all the cognitive functions that a developing child needed, except I couldn’t form a sentence to save my life. I ended up being placed in speech therapy that way people could understand me and I could stop making grunts and mumbling my words together. I feel as though the reason I “articulate my words too much” in my music is because of not being able to be understood as a child. Being misunderstood can be demoralizing for sure. In being misunderstood though, I learned different ways to effectively communicate my points, ideas, and opinions to others in order to help them understand me better. If you’re reading this and feel misunderstood, then you are not alone and I can empathize with your plight in some capacity.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always been an entertaining person to be around. Ever since I can remember, there have been people telling me that I would do great things. With my first name being directly tied to the son of God, I thought I was destined to do great things as well. I’ve been told I take myself too seriously, but I don’t find that to be insulting because my life is the most important thing that I have. I’m not a serious person by any means, which is why I currently create comedic content to curate and cultivate new & existing relationships. The content I make online is purely satire based on events I’ve seen, heard about, or experienced. I first started making comedic content back in high school as a way for me to cope with the things I was dealing with. Eventually, people started to take notice and I was doing pretty good at it until I was discouraged by an individual who told me “To grow up, you’re almost in college.” I don’t know why I had initially listened to them at the moment, but I did stop and take a bit of a hiatus in creating user-generated content. I still wanted to create something though, so I started rapping back when I was 17 (during the year 2016) and I realized that I wasn’t half bad. I dropped my first song on SoundCloud. I made music from 2016-2017 (exclusively on SoundCloud), but took another hiatus from 2017-2020 where there was no music I dropped. I would make music, but it never got released because I was very picky and hard on myself. In 2020 during the pandemic, I finally dropped a song after 3 years of being in my own head. First I dropped “The Book (ft. Psyck) and then it was “Goin’ Off (ft. Napps)” by. NoChillSaint & Paulo. Both songs were well received and it inspired me to keep making more music. Flashforward to 2023, I have just dropped my first solo song with no features, my first album (a collaboration with Paulo), and now I use my own music in my satirical comedic videos. I love thinking about my journey and how it is finally coming full circle.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
TREAT YOUR FRIENDS LIKE THEY HAVE ALREADY MADE IT! I cannot emphasize this point enough. People tend to repost celebrity content or art that an influencer promotes instinctually because of the certain status they have. A simple like, comment, reshare on your story, sending it to others who might enjoy it, etc goes a VERY long way in making sure smaller creators get a chance to be heard. Most people have never met their favorite celebrity but will still support them because they feel as though they represent them. If your friend makes music, add their song to a playlist. You should actually, buy the song for 99 cents (or the album) because the money goes directly to the artist. Streaming is also nice as well if you don’t have $1-$10 to support. If your friend makes clothes, buy something. If you can’t afford their clothes, repost it on your story, so someone else who might be able to afford it can purchase it. It is all about exposure. The more exposure that small creators/artists get, the more likely it is that they’ll become bigger and actually be on “celebrity status” to other individuals. All of the creators/artists I know are just as good (sometimes even better) than the celebrities that people tend to praise. The only difference is the amount of exposure.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creator is my ability to control what I am putting out there. I love having my hands on every aspect of my creativity. I typically have the ideas, write the scripts, and do the video editing and effects in my satirical comedic content. I love knowing that “I made this” and “other people enjoy this just as much as I do.” It really gives me a sense of accomplishment I can’t get from doing anything else. Yes, we’re all consumers at some point, but creating is something different entirely.
