We were lucky to catch up with Noah Treshnell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Noah, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Retailers will produce and market whatever serves profitable growth. Success is measured in dollars and units sold, not in the intrinsic value of the product, nor the impact the brand has on community or environment. If a company’’s number one purpose is profit, there is no other purpose.
We are changing that.
Our name, Date of Birth, Inc. (D.O.B) takes inspiration from the birth of a new retail model, one that puts Purpose over Profit, where your dollar makes an impact and helps to create a better future.
All of our brands must meet at least one of our guiding principles of Sustainability, Inclusion and Local. When you shop a D.O.B brand, you know that we have done the research and stand by their purpose and practices.
D.O.B Principles: Sustainable. Inclusive. Local
Sustainable
We believe sustainability includes more than simply the materials. It is defined by the people, communities & environment affected along every step of the process.
Inclusive
We believe in Equality of Access, where everyone has access to better products, information and each other. Where the rights and conditions of all people are respected and supported.
Local
We believe in caring about where you’re from, and in contributing to and improving the lives of those in our local communities, neighborhoods, and cities.
Noah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
D.O.B provides a platform for brands, information and new ideas, a community connecting like-minded partners, people and experts. We will introduce smaller brands with original designs that are crafted by artisans and produced responsibly, and share giveback stories that show you the impact of your support. Our podcast brings you in-depth information and conversation with industry innovators and our blog has articles that question and comment on the current state of our world. Our social pages update you on product drops, news and behind the scenes. We hope you will share what you know and we expect to learn from you, too.
Do the clothes in your closet reflect your core values?
Each of us can make a difference. If you want to help drive meaningful change, we encourage you to vote with your dollar. When you shop on D.O.B, you support our brands, who in turn do more great things for people and the planet.
Together, we can get there faster!
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
When we first started Date of Birth Inc. we needed to recruit brand partners without a website or podcast or even social channels. We needed to paint the picture of what we aimed to build, a field of dreams moment, in order to build our first brand partnerships and begin building a real business that could amplify good in the world.
How’d you meet your business partner?
We met initially working together over 15 years ago at Restoration Hardware in Marin County CA. We then ended up working together again at Levi’s for over 5 years where we basically built and grew the direct to consumer side of the Levi’s & Docker’s business in the Americas.
We remained friends over the years and have common ethics & principles by which we live by. These deeply rooted principles which come in part from our upbringing in first generation families has shaped us and shaped the business we are building together..
