We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Noah Schleifer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Noah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Our goal at Harmony Mushroom Co is to provide the community with fresh, organic and exotic mushrooms that you cannot find anywhere else. Additionally, our secondary objective is to demystify the growing process so that those who are interested in growing their own food are less intimidated by the process. We do this through our workshops and classes and by open sourcing information and resources.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Noah Schleifer, and I began Harmony Mushroom Co in 2021. It began as a hobby, growing mushrooms for my own personal culinary use. The feedback from the community inspired me to pursue it at a commercial level. There was a void in our city for gourmet mushrooms, and I saw that as an opportunity to provide the community with the best possible produce that we could grow. There are only a handful of other growers in the state, and most of them intend to keep the information under lock and key, and do not have an interest in teaching people the process. We recognize that mushrooms are the future, and want to help everyone who is interested discover the same fulfillment that we found in growing mushrooms.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
We are surprised to find that word of mouth has been the best marketing strategy for us. The product speaks for itself, and people are enthusiastic to share it with their friends and family.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
The farm started as a side hustle, or a series of experiments. It started in the kitchen, and then I renovated an old shed on our property to house the business, and when it outgrew that within a few months we expanded into a bigger building. People were starting to take notice of the quality of the product, and the passion that I had for the business, which led to magazine articles and investors reaching out. I now happily work with a team to grow Harmony Mushroom Co so that we can provide more of our mushrooms for people across the state.
