We recently connected with Noah Asher and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Noah, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
This is a question I’ve been asking myself ever since my father passed away a year ago. At his funeral, I heard so many stories of the kind of man he was. I began wondering what would be said about me. Was I kind? Did I serve others? Did I light up a room or did I tear it down? But I’m hoping above all things, I’m known for loving God and loving others. I’ve needed grace in my life and I want to be known for extending it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Many years ago, I walked into a popular hotel chain and applied for a Front Desk position. They hired me on the spot and I began working the very next day. Three weeks later, the General Manager left and they moved me into the role. This was scary and challenging. The next few months were trial and error. I felt like I was enrolled into the school of hard-knocks. While the experience was difficult, it taught me some very valuable lessons. A few years later, I was in Operations developing other General Managers. This was my passion. I love helping people find their strengths and then maximizing those gifts. It was easy for me to empathize with what GM’s felt because I had been there. I ended up leaving to start my own business. My consulting company works with smaller businesses by doing Undercover Assessments and training. I find such joy in seeing companies and individuals grow. This is also seen in my writing. I just recently released a book called, CHAOS: Overcoming the Overwhelming. This is a Christian, nonfiction book with an emphasis on helping people find purpose in their pain and in their past.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Over a decade ago, I was arrested and incarcerated. This experience broke me. I thought life was over. In fact, I begged for my life to end. I couldn’t handle the pain and stress. But something awakened in me. I found a hope like no other. I stopped asking, WHY ME? and started asking God to USE ME! Now, fast forward to a decade later…I own my own business and I have a book doing very well in America and in the UK. My setback was actually a setup for something greater. I now help other businesses thrive and help individuals find hope in their hurt.
Any advice for managing a team?
I believe everyone truly wants to be seen and heard. When you can stop for a moment–no matter how busy you are or think you are–and connect with your team, you all win. It doesn’t take much time or effort to speak with your team, but it will completely change the dynamics. You and your employees spend a majority of their day, their week, their lives at work. Why create an atmosphere where no one feels appreciated or valued? I don’t believe in “thanking” people for coming to work; the check is the reward for showing up. But I believe wholeheartedly in spotlighting employees when they go above and beyond. Spending money to develop employees and encourage employees will never be a waste. There should always be money specifically allocated for this. When you do, I know you will reap the benefits!
