We were lucky to catch up with Nkunim Owusu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nkunim, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
After I finished college I had two choices go to grad school or pursue content creation. I started making content in 2020 and I was doing really well and impacting a lot of people but never took it seriously because I thought it wasn’t sustainable. So when Covid died down I went back to school to get my degree in criminal justice. But when I was school I loved criminal justice but I wasn’t passionate about it. I didn’t even know what I wanted to do with my degree I honestly felt like I was just wasting my time. But one day I sat there and realized how passionate I was about making content and how even though I wasn’t taking it seriously I was very successful in that field and I loved making peoples day better. And seeing my peers be successful in this field I knew there was a opportunity to do what I love and make money from it. So I had 2 choices go to grad school or take a leap of faith. I was scared at first cause I come from a family that believes school is the way to become successful. But I wasn’t going to live a life projected on me I wanted to live a life I was proud of. So I got the courage and told my dad I wanted to do content creation he was skeptical but supportive. It was scary to do that but living a life I dread was even scarier to me.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Nkunim Owusu I’m 22 years old my parents are from Ghana but I was born in America. I started content creation by joining tiktok in 2019 but started taking it seriously in 2020. My video making process is just praying to God for ideas and as I go through out my day ideas just come or take hours out my way to sit down and write ideas down and scripts. I developed the discipline to show up everyday by writing a bad ending to my story basically a pile of notes of what would happen if I give up and reading that scares me into working hard and trying my best everyday. I mostly just provide entertainment for my audience I feel like everybody needs a laugh and I’m just happy to provide that to people. What sets me apart from most creators is my personality I put a lot of my passions and my type of comedy into my videos from certain subjects like videos games to doing slightly dark humor. And I’m not afraid to be myself on the camera no matter how I’m viewed. I’m proud of developing a following of people who genuinely care about me. One thing I want my followers to know is that even though I want to make a living off this I don’t do it for the money I do it straightly for entertaining my viewers I love making peoples days with my videos.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I just started interacting with my followers or people who interacted with my videos off the get go and that’s how I got most of my loyal supporters. My piece of advice is connect with the people who support you follow them back, respond to their comments/dms. Genuinely build a connection with them to make them care about you because if you have a loyal audience you’re set for life.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Well I used to make meme content when I first started tiktok and that got me to 370k followers. But one of my friends made me realize if I wanted to be taken seriously in the content creation field I would have to start using my voice and stop using sounds to be taken more seriously by brands and build a better connection with my audience. It was hard change but it definitely was necessary I didn’t want to be viewed as a meme but as a creator and I wanted my audience to actually care about me so I made a new tiktok account and started posting only skits. At first I was worried about how my followers would view the change but they love it so now I can truly call myself a content creator.
