We recently connected with Nkechi May-Nzeribe and have shared our conversation below.
Nkechi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
As they say, “necessity is the mother of invention”.
I learnt how to Virtually style spaces (3D Renders) and do general graphic design because I found it easier to communicate through visuals on alot of ideas.
Especially in the real estate market, I realised alot of people also struggle to communicate what their preferences are and it was a tad exhausting for all concerned to constantly try to figure it out.
It felt like a logical move to monetize my passion for designing cosy spaces with helping clients visuals their perfect home / space.
Nkechi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My portfolio is uniquely a 3-fold one – “Brand, Strategy and Design.”
With Branding & Strategy, I help clients increase sales and ROI but using their identity, story and values to craft compelling content for their target audience. It covers anything from market research to product design, marketing and strategy for gaining more market share and sustaining that momentum.
It also includes problem solving on brand matters affecting ROI and achieving other business objectives.
With Design, I strongly believe your office, home and spaces are a reflection/extension of your brand. It’s important to any business to work, live or function in spaces that boost creativity, harmony and foster a sense of belonging / comfort.
All these considerations consciously and subconsciously show your audience who you are, what you value and solidifies the perception/impression you want to leave on them.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I have had to learn and keep learning that perfection does not exist and even mistakes can have market value too.
People want to learn what to do as much as they want to learn what to avoid doing.
In my personal journey and even In my career, I was always perfection was how you stand out from the crowd. How i needed to be better than the best or taught that details matter, presentation is important and everything needs to be wrapped up in a perfect bow to be truly accepted.
None of that was 100% necessary. It just created panic, insecurity and left me feeling anxious all the time about whether my designs were good enough or if I had enough knowledge to speak up in crowded rooms.
Infact, embracing my humanity and Authenticity is what has been instrumental in helping me leave a mark with my target audience and clients.
By being so open about my journey to self discovery and talking about hiccups along the way, including ways I solved or pivoted, it has helped build trust and a sense of relatability to my brand.
While the objective is to do things the right way, with integrity and attention to details, i can still be human, unsure, unprepared and even doubt alittle.
What’s important is that, I keep showing up everyday, trying to be a better version of myself, learning and adapting to become better, brighter and more focused.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Consistency and transparency is my main strategy.
I’m a very firm believer in telling my story, so no one else crafts an alternative version of it for me.
Plus, If i don’t tell my story, no one would ever know who I am or how to find me and my business.
So my strategy is getting people to know me, what I value, what my services are and who I am when the lights go darkest.
All this helps me build credibility with my audience and keeps them engaged with my day to day or week to week trajectory.
