We were lucky to catch up with Nizzy Mac recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nizzy, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I started creating content about 8 years ago and fell in love with it. I had a passion for filming videos and editing long and short form content. I have always had a full time job while creating content which always was a struggle issue for time. I would either wake up very early or stay up super late to create content outside of work hours. I found myself very tired and sometimes I would lose interest in filming videos because it started feeling like more of a task and I wanted to just sleep. This year I quit my job due to mental health reasons. I did not wish to continue working when I started to make enough money on my own to help pay for my rent and utilities. My dream did not happen overnight, but if I could go back in time I would have quit working a 9-5 sooner.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I create fun and engaging content for plus size women, and women of all ages shapes and sizes. I started making wigs as a side hobby because I did my own wigs/ hair and everyone would always compliment me and ask if I could make them custom wigs. I started selling wigs for about a year, and did not succeed at it, the marketing and customer relations part was more than I could handle. So I started making YouTube videos teaching women how to style and customize their wigs to look like mine. This was a major success and I grew a large audience from this. Going forward clothing brands started reaching out as my audience grew. I started making fashion content and this also became majorly successful. I continue to make both hair and fashion videos as my audience knows me and trusts my guidance for both niches. I have been doing this for over 8 years and I am self made and have done everything on my own. I am now getting paid contracts and brand partnerships for all the hard work I have put in. I built everything on my own and handle my business like a professionally owned and operated business.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I believe that society can be super helpful in supporting creatives by spreading positive interactions. A lot of times the word “influencer” is frowned upon because people are getting free stuff and posting about it. What many people dont know is all the steps and hard work you have to put in in the background to actually get this free stuff. I believe that society needs to treat and view influencers and influencer work as a real business operation because it is. Society needs to get back to the positive view of influencer culture and uplift each other.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal that is keeping me on my creative journey is being financially free and stable thanks to all the hard work I myself have put in. I have upgraded to a new home because I was able to afford the payments due to creating content. I was able to upgrade my living space as well as my camera and film equipment. So I know that it takes time, but I am corssing things off of my goal list one thing at a time, and I do not see me stopping anytime soon. I have the drive and the passion still. I also have a goal of owning a Pink Tesla, I am still working on that but it is my ultimate goal.
