We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Niyah Lawrence a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Niyah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think being successful takes a lot of hard work and hustle. As I am learning this now to be successful myself I realize that I don’t have anyone to really hold my hand. It all depends on the motivation you can muster up for your self if you really want it bad enough! I also think having someone to be your support is a part of that as well and I’m very grateful to be surrounded by amazing supporters of my journey!

Niyah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello everyone! My name is niyah and i am pursing my dream as a interior decorator and starting my business in second hand sales! I am what you call a thrifter and i resale the items I find or upcycle items that need a little push! I am just really starting out on finding my purpose in life . I’m twenty years old and a junior in college. I had rough time with choosing a career and recently transferred schools for interior design! I really wanted to get into this field because I just love decorating and have always had a eye for it! I have always been a crafty person so that’s when the idea came of starting a business they really go hand in hand. There are a lot of great things in the world that get tossed aside that deserve a second chance . I gravitate to more vintage items/clothing but any piece is always a great piece if you make it! There are alot of great thrifters out there and I am proud to be apart of the community but I couldn’t say that I stand out because everyone has their own special preference and when we join together it really is a amazing thing! I have to say I am really proud of how far I have come, it’s been hard and emotional but dreams aren’t made to happen in one day. I have a great support system and mentor that are always there to have my back. I would want everyone to know that my goal is to make them happy and to fulfill their vision without breaking the bank!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn seems like a realistic one until you have had to start adulting. That is money!! I was very careless at first with money because I had a allowance and wasn’t really trying to start my business yet. Once I did I realized money was and is the biggest issue and working for it and getting it fast means it also leaves just as quick! But I am learning how to budget and slowing myself down to one project at a time no matter how enticing a deal or a piece of decor is . It’s important to be this way because overwhelming yourself with a bunch of little things is not a great way to start. Take it slow and remember one day at a time and the amount of money you have shouldn’t stop you!

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I have a amazing job as a assistant for a professional organizer called tailormyspace! We meet new people everyday and I get so excited that clients are interested in decorating their space as well! She has really let me take the reins when it comes to clients like this to help build my portfolio and we really work well together and learn from one another everyday ! Both jobs compliment each other so well and it’s amazing to get another point of view of having the organization part as well as the decorating part!
