We recently connected with Nix The Scientist and have shared our conversation below.
Nix, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Our new EP “Chosen I”, which we accidentally spent 2 years making, is probably one of the most meaningful things we’ve ever worked on. Part of why it took so long was that we made a rule early on to push ourselves and never settle on a song until we were 110% happy with it. It’s also the first EP we all contributed to as songwriters and we recorded, mixed, and mastered everything ourselves. The concept came from a ska song our bassist wrote back in 2016, which was about a man waking up in a post-apocalyptic world and believing he was meant to be a new messiah. We took the concept of the world being blown up by someone believing that doing so would be the only way to fix everything and used that setting as a backdrop for exploring a lot of ideas, from human nature to politics. This EP primarily deals with setting the stage leading up to the armageddon, while the following EPs deal with the aftermath.
Nix, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We’re a progressive alt rock power trio from Atlanta, GA. We formed in late 2019 and released our first singles during the height of the pandemic in 2020. Each of our members has more than a decade of stage experience, having performed in groups including ZALE, Venice Overdrive, and alongside figures like Wesley Cook, Moses Mo of Mother’s Finest, and Hannah Thomas. We’re distinguished by our meticulous attention to textural sonic detail, 3-part vocal front, fiery live performances and overall expansive sound design.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Something that’s definitely changed tremendously during our time as musicians is the landscape around our industry. These days it feels very bite-sized, with more of a focus on individual singles and short-format content than full albums. It’s also heavily driven by social media, which, as millennials, is something that at times can feel incredibly daunting to keep up with. It also takes a lot of effort to create music and content. For example, on the last song (“The End”) of our new EP, we probably spent an hour or two just dialing in the sound of the piano used in the song. Heck, it took us 6 months just to finish the whole song, going back and forth on tiny details like vocal delivery and background vocal processing.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
With this new EP, as well as the band in general, we really wanted to get back to the basics of being a band: getting in a room and making music with your best friends. We wanted to make music we’d all enjoy, without really worrying too much about what other people might think or whether the songs would get us signed or played on the radio. Our whole mentality is that if we make something that we enjoy, the listener definitely will too.
