Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nivek. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nivek, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted to be a DJ when I first discovered EDM. I would say around the time I was in 8th or 9th grade. I started to learn how to DJ around the age of 18 or 19. I was taught the basics then I took it upon myself to continue to learn from YouTube and a lot of practice.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the industry around the age of 20 or so. Just taking any DJ gigs I could. Mainly restaurants. Learning from DJs I’ve met and mainly just gaining experience and finding my style. I’m a open format DJ, meaning I play all genres. The thing that was most difficult thing was to learn how to reading a crowd. You can’t just go in a go crazy right as soon as the club/bar opens. That’s part of the gaining experience. Now when I DJ I don’t ever prepare my sets, I just go with the flow and go off of the crowds energy. It took me a while but when I found my style it just worked for me. What works for me may not work for other people. When I hit that stage or DJ booth, I see it as a performance. Not another night at the job. I think that’s what sets me apart from other DJs.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes! If I had the resources I have no compared to when I first started who knows where I would be today. Back when I first started it was hard to find music, especially the exclusive ones. Now there’s so many record pools you can subscribe to and the music is constantly updated. And social media is bigger now than it was before.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love it when I hear the crowd singing and cheering to the songs I play. It literally gives me the chills and makes it worth it every time. I know I did my best when I’m sweating at the end of the night and people give me compliments.
