We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Niurquis Serrano a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Niurquis, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Ardeco Studio Athelier, started as a dream to offer my passion for arts. In others words:
* Ardeco: Arts and Decoration combined.
* Studio: as a professional background in Architecture, Interior design, and Photography.
* Athelier: referring to creativity in a elegant and artisanal way with the passion for Sewing, Embroidery by cross-stitch and Brush Strokes.
Paper, brush and scissor represents the common tools I used in the previous categories.
In other words, to create something with your hands, something that others will remember for ever. So, I came out with the slogan: “Because handmade means unique and personalized.”

Niurquis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m form the Dominican Republic, and island in the Caribbean that has a passion for arts, craft and cross stitch; since young age I learned at my catholic school to give 100% on everything I do. I have a professional background as an Architect and Interior Designer and a Crafter lover, dedicated and perfectionist!
• ARDECO begins as a restlessness and a dream of sharing the passion of creating and performing craft, and that can reach more people forming part of their lives as something memorable.
All my works are designed and handmade by me. Everything is unique and is something that characterize me. I love having the opportunity to make beautiful and unique thing that you will remember for ever.
” Because of that, ARDECO is unique and personalized “

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
This is still a side hustle that I trying to scaled up as a full time business.
After too many years without making any craft, I restarted with the embroidery by cross-stitch as a hobby and decided to take some painting classes over wood to learn something different. My instructor introduced me with a client in the need of personalized baby gift, and everything started from there!
I made a set of personalized embroidery baby bib and burp and when the client received the gift, her reaction was to framed it and used as a wall decoration for the nursery room because she said it was too beautiful and she wants to keep it forever.

We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
At this moment I am selling just by Etsy Marketplace. I choose it because was the only one available on that time for crafters and it was easy to set up.
The cons for this marketplace is the fee associated it’s been changing and raising over last year.
