We were lucky to catch up with Nithya Tammana recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nithya, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The mission of Save Drop is deeply personal and driven by a genuine concern for our planet’s future. It all began when I, Nithya Tammana, a 9-year-old environmental enthusiast, noticed a troubling amount of water wasted every day while waiting for the shower to heat up. This realization sparked a profound awareness of the broader issue of water wastage and its implications, especially when more than 3.2 billion people around the world still lack access to clean water.
Understanding that small changes can lead to significant impacts, I founded Save Drop to raise awareness about water waste and promote practical solutions, like installing water recirculation pumps. These pumps can save thousands of gallons of water annually, addressing the issue of unnecessary water wastage.
My mission is meaningful because it addresses a critical global challenge. Water is a precious resource, and conserving it is vital for the health and sustainability of our planet. By focusing on practical, actionable solutions, I aim to inspire others to take part in water conservation efforts. Every drop saved not only helps preserve this essential resource but also highlights the collective responsibility we have toward environmental stewardship.
Save Drop is not just about reducing water waste; it’s about fostering a culture of sustainability and responsibility. It’s about teaching future generations the importance of conserving resources and making a tangible difference in the world. This mission resonates deeply with me because it embodies the values of care, responsibility, and proactive action toward creating a better, sustainable future for everyone.
Nithya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
About Me and Save Drop:
Hello! My name is Nithya Tammana, and I’m a 9-year-old environmental advocate with a passion for water conservation. My journey into this field began with a simple observation at home: the significant amount of cold water wasted while waiting for the shower to heat up. This seemingly small issue opened my eyes to a much larger global problem, where billions of people do not have access to clean water. Driven by a desire to make a tangible difference, I founded Save Drop, a grassroots initiative focused on raising awareness about water wastage and promoting practical solutions to address this critical issue.
Our Mission and Services:
Save Drop aims to educate individuals and communities about the importance of water conservation and to provide simple, effective solutions. One of our primary focuses is advocating for the installation of water recirculation pumps in households. These pumps are designed to save the cold water that typically goes down the drain while waiting for hot water, redirecting it back to the water heater. This not only conserves thousands of gallons of water annually but also reduces water and sewer bills for households.
What Sets Us Apart:
What sets Save Drop apart is our commitment to making water conservation accessible and actionable for everyone. As a young founder, my perspective brings a unique and relatable approach to the cause. I strive to inspire people of all ages to take small steps that collectively make a big impact. Our initiative is not just about technology; it’s about fostering a culture of sustainability and responsibility.
Proud Moments and Achievements:
I am incredibly proud of the awareness and change Save Drop has brought about so far. One of the highlights has been witnessing the enthusiastic response from people who, after learning about the benefits of recirculation pumps, decide to install them in their homes. Knowing that our efforts are directly contributing to significant water savings is deeply rewarding. Additionally, my work with Save Drop has been recognized and supported by various environmental advocates and organizations, further validating the importance of our mission.
Message to Followers and Supporters:
To all our potential supporters, followers, and fans, I want you to know that Save Drop is dedicated to making a real difference in water conservation. Our mission is to educate, inspire, and provide practical solutions that everyone can adopt. We believe that every drop counts and that together, we can create a more sustainable future. Whether it’s through installing recirculation pumps, spreading the word about water conservation, or supporting our initiatives, your involvement makes a significant impact.
Call to Action:
We also have a petition to make water recirculation pumps mandatory in all households and to provide tax credits to those who install them. Just like the incentives for electric cars and solar panels, we believe that saving water should be rewarded. Please take a moment to sign our petition and encourage others to do the same. Your support is crucial in helping us achieve our goal of saving millions of gallons of water every day. Here is the petition: https://www.change.org/p/stop-cold-water-waste-while-waiting-for-a-hot-shower-take-action-now
Join us in our journey to save water and protect our planet. Together, we can ensure that future generations have access to the precious resource of clean water. Thank you for being a part of this important mission!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Building Our Audience on Social Media:
Building an engaged and supportive audience on social media is a crucial aspect of spreading the message and mission of Save Drop. As a young environmental advocate, I’ve focused on several key strategies to connect with people, raise awareness about water conservation, and inspire action.
1. Authentic Storytelling:
People are drawn to genuine stories that they can relate to. I share personal experiences and stories, like how I noticed water wastage at home and decided to take action by founding Save Drop. By sharing these authentic stories, I aim to create a personal connection with my audience, making them more likely to engage with our content and support our mission.
2. Educational Content:
Educating my audience about the importance of water conservation is at the heart of our social media strategy. We regularly post informative content, including facts about water wastage, the benefits of recirculation pumps, and simple tips for conserving water at home. Educational posts help to raise awareness and empower people with the knowledge to make a difference.
3. Engaging Visuals:
Visual content is incredibly powerful on social media. We use engaging visuals, such as infographics, videos, and photos, to capture our audience’s attention. For example, we share videos demonstrating how recirculation pumps work and images from events where we promote water conservation. These visuals help to convey our message in an impactful and memorable way.
4. Community Involvement:
Building a community around Save Drop is essential. We encourage our followers to share their water-saving tips, experiences, and successes. By creating a space where people can contribute and feel involved, we foster a sense of community and collective action. Additionally, we highlight the efforts of our Save Drop Ambassadors, who help spread the message in their schools, libraries, and local communities.
5. Collaborations and Partnerships:
Partnering with other environmental organizations, influencers, and advocates helps to amplify our reach. For instance, collaborating with individuals and groups who share our commitment to sustainability allows us to tap into their audiences and spread our message further. Recently, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Professor Richard Riman from Rutgers and Mr. Fisher from Heal The Planet, both of whom are now advocates for Save Drop.
6. Interactive Campaigns:
Interactive campaigns, such as polls, challenges, and contests, engage our audience in fun and meaningful ways. For example, we recently ran a poll asking if people had heard about recirculation pumps and shared the results with our followers. These interactive elements not only increase engagement but also provide valuable insights into our audience’s awareness and attitudes.
7. Celebrating Milestones:
We celebrate and share our milestones and achievements with our audience. Whether it’s reaching a certain number of petition signatures, receiving an award, or successfully getting recirculation pumps installed in households, we make sure to acknowledge and thank our supporters. Celebrating these milestones fosters a sense of shared success and encourages continued support.
8. Consistent Posting and Engagement:
Consistency is key to building a loyal audience. We maintain a regular posting schedule to keep our followers engaged and informed. Additionally, we actively respond to comments, messages, and questions, fostering a two-way dialogue with our audience. This consistent engagement helps to build trust and loyalty among our followers.
By focusing on these strategies, we are steadily growing a dedicated and engaged audience on social media. Our goal is to create a community of passionate individuals who are committed to water conservation and are inspired to take action. Through authentic storytelling, educational content, engaging visuals, community involvement, collaborations, interactive campaigns, celebrating milestones, and consistent engagement, we are building a strong and supportive audience for Save Drop. Together, we can make a significant impact in conserving water and protecting our planet.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A Story of Resilience:
One of the most defining moments in my journey with Save Drop was the day I encountered significant resistance while trying to spread the message about water conservation and the importance of recirculation pumps. It was during a large community event that I had the opportunity to set up a booth and share my mission with a diverse group of people.
Excited and a bit nervous, I set up my display with information about water wastage, the benefits of recirculation pumps, and my petition to make these pumps mandatory in all households. As people started to visit my booth, I was met with a mix of curiosity and skepticism. Many attendees were unaware of the concept of recirculation pumps and questioned their effectiveness. Some even dismissed my efforts as insignificant or unnecessary.
At first, the skepticism was disheartening. I had worked so hard to gather information, prepare my presentation, and spread awareness, only to face doubt and resistance. However, instead of letting this discourage me, I decided to view it as an opportunity to educate and inspire. I realized that resilience meant standing firm in the face of challenges and continuing to push forward, no matter the obstacles.
Determined to make an impact, I spent the entire day engaging with visitors, answering their questions, and sharing personal stories about why water conservation is so important to me. I demonstrated how the recirculation pump works and explained the tangible benefits it could bring to their households. Slowly but surely, I began to see a change in their attitudes. People who were initially skeptical started to show interest, ask more questions, and express their support.
By the end of the event, I had not only educated numerous individuals about the importance of water conservation but also gathered a significant number of signatures for my petition. What started as a challenging day turned into a triumph, as I saw firsthand the power of persistence and resilience.
This experience taught me that resilience is about staying true to your mission, even when faced with doubt and resistance. It’s about turning challenges into opportunities and never giving up on what you believe in. Despite the initial setbacks, I remained steadfast in my commitment to Save Drop and continued to advocate for water conservation with renewed determination.
Looking back, that day at the community event stands out as a pivotal moment in my journey. It reinforced my belief that every small effort counts and that resilience is key to driving meaningful change. Today, as I continue to work towards making recirculation pumps mandatory and promoting water conservation, I carry with me the lessons learned from that experience, knowing that resilience and perseverance will always guide me through challenges and help me achieve my goals.
