We recently connected with Nisha Melvani and have shared our conversation below.
Nisha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
The first dollar I earned as a creative was during the initial US Covid outbreak in 2020 when I signed a contract with Penguin Random House to write a cookbook, ‘Practically Vegan’. The book was published on March 29, 2022, and it was one of the most memorable days of my life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a Registered Dietitian and trained vegan chef, I have made it my life’s work to help others eat more plants!
I was in my early twenties when I started my master’s degree in Nutrition at Columbia University. It wasn’t until I had my second child, about three years later, that I discovered how much better I feel on a plant-based diet. I have a lot more energy, remain at a healthy weight, and feel physically stronger.
I have raised three healthy teenagers on this same diet and they continue to flourish.
I aspire to make plant-based eating easy, fun, budget-friendly, and tasty. I have a blog (cookingforpeanuts.com) with all my recipes, and transform them into videos for Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Tik Tok (@cookingforpeanuts).
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a mom of three teenagers, working from home and creating my own schedule has allowed me to be there for my children, especially in their most formative years.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As a creative, you are constantly pivoting. When video took off and reels became a thing, I had to quickly adapt and start producing entertaining recipe videos to stay relevant. I could no longer depend on still images to drive traffic to my website.
