We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nisey Mckay-Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nisey , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
One morning I remember arriving to work and I called my now husband and told him how much I didn’t want to work that job anymore. I told him how cold the building was, how I resented answering calls all day and I was just miserable. I had already been doing hair here and there on the weekends and he told me ” baby you already doing hair that comes natural, just make it full time and really apply yourself”. So I quit ! I went into the building spoke to the manager and told them I’m resigning. Thats when the idea to use my god given talent to make women feel beautiful and more confident was born. I made sure I took as many classes to stay up with the trends and techniques to provide the best transformations. Plus with me moving to a small town from a big city I had an advantage because, I had my own signature on my work. I worked at home for years building my clientele. Once my clientele was solid and I became booked months in advance and highly recommended I stepped out on faith and opened my own Beauty Bar. “NM Luxury Beauty Bar”.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Funny thing is ! I got into the hair industry at first to just do my own hair. My grandma raised me she wasn’t into the trends and I wanted to wear extensions and have the ability to change my look. Im a visual learner I can see something and mimic what I see so there was a lot of hair styles I loved and I always had the ability to recreate it with my own twist. I feel like hair is art , hair is powerful , hair has the ability to change the way you feel, the way you walk , the way to talk and mostly hair can rebuild self confidence. Thats amazing to me and the fact that have a gift that comes naturally to me is a blessing . I have clients who have no hair due to health issues and I’m able to give them a look they have dreamed of but thought it was impossible. I have elderly clients who literally aged backwards by the end of their installation. I have brides that book me for their events and get top notch service and hair designs and extensions that they have seen on social media and magazines but now affordable right at their front door. I know the ultimate goal is to have a salon and have employees but I could never come from behind the chair because I am blessing each and every person who books me and the emotion that comes with them seeing themselves when its done is priceless. I wanted to become a one stop shop so to speak I have a vendor I have been in business with over 7 years making sure I provide luxury affordable hair extensions and lace. I also provide products for easy at home touch ups until the next appointment.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I moved to Valdosta, GA from Miami, Fl . All I had was my name and my reputation. I made sure I didn’t miss appointments, I treat each appointment like its my very first appointment . You know you want to make sure every single detail is perfect. When you give your all you can tell my clients are so happy and its free marketing because they want everybody to see them and the first thing someone say is who did you hair ?! I worked odd hours to accommodate clients during the holidays and did early bird appointments for special occasions like prom, birthdays and vacations. I take pictures of all my clients and post my content even if I get 1 like on social media I stay consistent.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
When I started my hair line I started with $500 dollars. I knew people like to shop by sight. I created wigs and did a few installs and I pushed my content then next thing I knew I was getting orders and wigs that was handmade was going so fast. Once I made back my investment I saved it and did it all over again !
