We were lucky to catch up with Nisa Brooks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nisa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Ever since I was a little girl I loved to make art but in the beginning, I never imagined myself being a photographer or videographer. As I got older I became aware of the huge lack of black creatives in my community. It was incredibly disheartening but I knew it was necessary to make a change and create a space that would allow for our self-expression. A lot of family photographs or commercial images I saw growing up didn’t capture people of color properly. As a young painter, I knew color and light was important and I wanted to create the beautiful images of black and brown people that I envisioned. I utilized that passion and started taking pictures of people who look like me and showcasing them in a fresh perspective.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nisa and I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. My hometown was a huge inspiration for me because I grew up around so much diversity but as I got older I realized we weren’t represented fairly in our community. My passion stems from the desire to tell our stories through our own lens and not be limited by stereotypes.
I am a photographer and videographer and I specialize in editorial and conceptual photography. I’m extremely passionate about branding and I love working with established and developing businesses to create a brand identity that reflects the diverse world we live in today! I am very proud of the progress I’ve made in the industry as a young black and brown woman. I’ve come to learn that all of our perspectives are valuable and I strive to share my story so others like me know their perspectives matter!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been putting myself out there. I’ve always been a fairly shy person but it was necessary for me to learn how to communicate with others effectively. Word of mouth is truly one of the best marketing strategies. When you’re confident that you do the job well, a lot of the time your work speaks for itself but you also have to be a person your clients enjoy working with. I’ve had so many people tell me how comfortable I’ve made them and that made the results so much better. I really love to get to know people and a lot of the time it will bring you new opportunities.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the excitement you get when you’re able to bring an idea to life. As a creative you’re able to tell stories that mean something and that make people feel seen. It’s great to create a project that other people support and uplift.
