Born in Ohio and now firmly rooted in the vibrant energy of Florida, I hold the roles of a devoted full-time mom to my daughter, Mahlani Yarbrough, and a dedicated professional embracing the 9-5 hustle to not only provide for my cherished family but also nurture the growth of my business.
My journey in the world of fashion and design began as a deeply seeded passion during my formative years. We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
At Nique’s Chic Selections LLC, we primarily operate through our own website. My journey began four years ago on Etsy, which I viewed as a valuable beta stage for my business. It allowed me to test my products and selling style without a significant upfront investment. Etsy was an excellent platform for launching my brand because it provided immediate access to a vast audience of shoppers interested in handmade and unique items.
However, as I grew more confident in my offerings, I realized some key limitations of Etsy. While it was a fantastic starting point, not all of my products were handmade; many were private label items or sourced from other small businesses. Although this variety enriched my product line, it also conflicted with Etsy’s strict selling and reselling rules. I wanted to create a unique brand identity that truly reflected my vision, and I felt that a platform like Etsy didn’t allow me that freedom.
After selling out within six months on Etsy, I decided to transition to my own website. The original design was a work in progress, but due to personal circumstances—specifically, the joyful distraction of welcoming my baby—I had to put that project on hold. However, this time away also gave me the opportunity to learn more about website hosting and design.
When I returned to the project, I started from scratch and built a new website that officially launched in 2022. This decision has proven to be immensely rewarding. Having my own site not only allows me to fully express my brand’s identity but also offers greater control over the customer experience. I can curate my offerings and manage my brand narrative without the constraints of a marketplace platform.
In terms of pros and cons, selling on my website has its advantages. I enjoy complete autonomy over my branding, marketing strategies, and customer engagement. I can design the shopping experience to align with my brand’s aesthetics and values. Additionally, I have the flexibility to implement my own policies, promotions, and customer relationship strategies.
On the downside, managing my own website does require more effort in terms of marketing and driving traffic. Unlike established platforms like Etsy or Amazon, where customers are already browsing, I need to invest time and resources into SEO, social media marketing, and customer acquisition strategies to ensure my products reach potential buyers.
In summary, while Etsy served as a valuable launchpad for Nique’s Chic Selections, transitioning to my own website has allowed me to build a brand that truly reflects my vision and values. I’m excited to continue growing and evolving in the fashion industry, bringing unique selections to my customers while fostering a community around my brand.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Deciding to run a small business has certainly been a rollercoaster ride, filled with both challenges and triumphs. One particular chapter stands out that truly illustrates my resilience.
Early in my journey, I faced a series of setbacks that felt overwhelming. I lost access to my office space, which disrupted my workflow and made it difficult to manage inventory and fulfill orders. Simultaneously, I experienced a setback with some of my products—issues with suppliers led to delays that frustrated my customers and resulted in a loss of trust. To add to that, I dealt with the unfortunate experience of losing a website I had poured countless hours into developing.
At one point, it felt like I was up against a wall. I had the nagging thought that perhaps this journey was too difficult, but instead of letting those feelings consume me, I chose to shift my perspective. I reminded myself of my ultimate goal: to create a brand that resonates with my customers and provides unique fashion selections that they love.
Rather than succumbing to defeat, I evaluated where I went wrong. I took a step back to analyze the situations and identify the lessons they offered. For instance, losing my office space taught me the importance of flexibility; I learned to adapt my operations to work efficiently from home. The supplier issues pushed me to diversify my sources and build stronger relationships with multiple vendors to mitigate risks in the future. And when my website went down, I realized that investing time in learning more about digital backup solutions and website security was essential for my long-term success.
Each setback became an opportunity for growth. I re-planned, adjusted my strategies, and pushed forward with renewed determination. I embraced the idea that failure is not the end but rather a stepping stone to something greater. This mindset shift not only helped me bounce back but also reinforced my belief in my brand and my mission.
Today, as I reflect on those challenging moments, I realize they were critical in shaping my resilience. They taught me that every obstacle can be transformed into an opportunity for learning and growth.
