We were lucky to catch up with Niomi Nicci recently and have shared our conversation below.
Niomi, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Readers approached me at a book festival and asked what the most important factor in writing my book was, especially since I had been in clinical research for more than twenty years.
That moment-defining change happened while I worked in a microbiology laboratory for almost a decade. After ignoring the pain in one of my eyes for days, my vision started to blur and become hazy, then went completely red. A medical referral to a specialist and blood tests confirmed I was suffering from an autoimmune condition. After several months of treatment with medication that at times made me feel unwell, I did not want to spend my life treating the symptoms. I wanted to address the root cause and started researching natural ways to address the health issues I was having.
That was the defining moment for me to transition into wellness and, more importantly, share the spiritual journey I had been on for more than twenty years, all of which culminated in writing my first award-winning book, Journey of a Radiant Heart.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My career began as a summer research intern at Rockefeller University in New York City, followed by graduate clinical microbiology studies at the University of Pennsylvania. While working on clinical trials in healthcare-related facilities for over two decades, I also journaled about life and whether there is more than meets the eye.
During that period, I was also on a quest for enlightenment, learning to balance the world of ‘I need to see it to believe it’ with the spiritual work of ‘having faith and believing.’ Finding the right balance was a source of empowerment and helped me harmonize two distinct ways of living through my thoughts.
Sharing these profound concepts about enlightenment and wellness through my book and the wellness blog cösmo•lytes has been my greatest accomplishment to date. I am immensely proud of both, as those platforms allow me to convey a message: our minds possess an incredible power that can often be underestimated. We can manifest and create the life we deserve.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Learning to focus and concentrate was a challenge for me some years ago. I remember my first year of college, nearly failing all my classes, and that struggle continued through undergraduate and graduate school. Fortunately, my stubborn nature would not allow me to give up; I did what was necessary to complete my assignments, even if it meant retaking a class. I was not aware at the time I experienced symptoms of the autoimmune condition I was later diagnosed with. However, I have managed the condition with a combination of natural remedies, dietary modifications, and medical supervision, which has been a beacon of hope in my journey.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When working on my first book, I was told to write from my point of view only, and I definitely had to unlearn that lesson after receiving feedback to consider how the reader would interpret my ‘voice.’
