Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ningchun Dong. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi NINGCHUN, thanks for joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
I think not being afraid to make mistakes is the most important lesson for me. Because my previous job involved working with physical publications and offline activities material design. During a high pressure design cycle, imperfections or errors are inevitable. But don’t be afraid to boldly let go and show off your design skills just because you might worry about making a mistake.

NINGCHUN, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, I’m a graphic designer, and I previously worked for The New York Times Style China and Food&Wine China.
I’ve loved buying and read sneakers and fashion magazines since middle school. It was during college, when I chose visual communication as my major, that I realized my growing interest in typography. After graduation, I was honored to enter the fashion magazine industry through company interviews.
In my role, my main responsibility was to take the images and text provided by the editors and design a layout that matched the style of the magazine while avoiding a monotonous appearance.
For me, solving the needs of clients or adding an element of interest to fashion shoot that wasn’t particularly well-photographed are the most challenging. These problems are tricky, yet give me the opportunity to solve them, which is very fulfilling for me.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The main thing that drives my passion for magazine design is that I was deeply influenced by magazines while growing up, so I have strong emotional connection to them. The photos, text, and design in magazines were once my only source of up-to-date information. Therefore, after becoming a magazine designer, I have responsibility to the readers, and I hope to showcase the many possibilities of magazine design through my work.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a designer is to present the results in the form of a physical book in the hands of readers. The book’s ability to me means that more unfamiliar or interested readers can see the author’s words and designer’s thoughtfulness.
