We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nina Romer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nina, thanks for joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
I personally wish I would have started my journey as a travel content creator earlier. But at the same time I am very well aware of the fact, that I wasn’t ready. When I started my New York travel blog in 2022, I had been dreaming about a free-roaming life for many years. I think my fascination with Influencers on Instagram partly comes from my internal desire to live an equally free life filled with opportunities, growth and a community. So when I moved to New York in September 2022, I started to freelance as a marketing consultant. I basically did the job I had before, just out of New York instead of Germany. But I felt a sense of insecurity I had never felt before and at the same time I had gained a lot of free time in my new job. After speaking to a friend of mine, who was equally travel addicted as I am and who had started her own travel blog in 2019, I was hooked. Maybe it was finally time to pursue my calling an share everything about my passion for travelling the world?
Living in New York would give me the perfect starting point and at the same time I had someone who already became a full time travel influencer to look up to.
My beginnings were extremely humbling. I had never before worked with wordpress let aside anything to do with SEO. So I dived into this world and over the past 2 years I worked through so many ups and downs, I cannot even count them anymore.
I am very proud, where I am today. I have a frequented travel blog up and running and I see progress every day. Why would I have wished for myself that I had started earlier?
Because with AI and everything, nobody knows where things will go. In addition, there is so much great content out there and it sometimes feels very intimidating.
But in the end, I am very happy, I am finally pursuing my dream life – because life is journey and we never know where it will take us next.

Nina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I am Nina, a German travel influencer living in New York City. I started my travel blog end of 2022. My mum and dad would take me on trips around the world from a very young age so that I had the privilege to have seen over 65 countries at the age of 29. I have been living abroad several times in Chile, South Africa, France, Mexico and now in the US. I LOVE to learn and use other languages and exploring, hiking, camping and travelling are my favorite things in the world. Coming from that background, I always felt a call to work in the travel industry, but I started a corporate career with great focus and never really acknowledged that dream of mine.
When I moved to NYC in September 2022, I finally felt the right energy and push to pursue my dreams. I started my blog Raus in die Welt where I share all my insights into the best restaurants in New York, the best sights to see and the hidden gems, you do not find on other blogs. I think, mostly woman are planning travel itineraries and that is why I chose a certain aesthetics for my blog. I want people to find all information in one place and get recommendations for everything they need to know in one place. I give very personal first hand descriptions of my real experience and you will find very honest opinions on my website. On my Instagram, I share my daily life in NYC and give recommendations for trips around the US.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had a very strong believe that my success only relied on my very hard work. And if I want something, I will not stop until I get what I want.
With my travel blog, this pushed me over the edge and at one point, I was in a mentally very bad state. I had to unlearn the lesson of giving everything you got for your passion and your success, because it cost me my well-being.
I think, being self-employed and building something new from the ground, takes in incredible amount of energy. And most entrepreneurs forget that even though the really want to make it work, their live should be about more than just work. This was a very hard lesson that I had to learn.
But on the bright side of that story, is a learning. The learning is about trusting the process, giving the amount of energy you have without violating your own boundaries and, most importantly, having fun. Because how much is creating your dream life with, if you burn-out doing that?

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to help people plan their perfect trip. I want to provide all the information tips and tricks at one place, so that the research for a big vacation is easy and seamless. By focusing on a great user experience and a clear target audience in mind, I try to streamline everything I do to cater people like myself.
