We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nina Osegueda. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nina below.
Hi Nina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I realized I wanted to be a heavy metal singer when I went to my first metal show, in college. My husband took me to see Dragonforce, who just released their first album. I was spellbound! I didn’t realize that this was the music I was searching for, or that the metal world was still thriving, though in a less popular/underground way. Hearing someone sing clear vocals over fast and heavy music was my awakening.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was raised in PG Country MD, where I went to public schools and was lucky enough to have had great music teachers. My mom realized I had a gift early, so she took me to auditions and encouraged me a lot. By the time I was in high school, I was singing professionally. I took time off for college (I got my Bachelors in Media Art and Animation), but those four years made me realize how important music was. I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of auditioning forever, but my boyfriend at the time (now my husband) took me to a metal show and I was immediately hooked with the idea. I went to Craigslist, and after a few years of trying with many musicians, I eventually found the guys in A Sound of Thunder.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Pay for our services! Your money shows your appreciation! With streaming media, it’s almost impossible for up-and-coming musicians to make a living (or even break even) by making music. The only way my band has been able to do it is by crowd funding. If you like a musician, please, buy their music. Directly from them, if possible. That’s the best way to keep us going!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to make the music I love and share it with as many people as possible. If I can get my voice into peoples’ ears, I’ll have fulfilled my mission.
