We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nina Hirten a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project that I’ve worked on is the music video for my song “Criminal (Panopticon)”. It was a really heavy remix of my original song “Criminal” done by JP Anderson of Rabbit Junk, who totally nailed a banger of a mix, and once I heard it I immediately knew what I wanted to do for a video.
The entire EP (“Panoptic”) is about feeling imprisoned in one’s own head, and the remix in particular had a seriously sci-fi vibe about it, so I came up with a story of a character with a TV for a head in a robot world who was trapped in a giant panopticon awaiting her judgement. She gets judged and sent to her digital-death.
I filmed, drew, and animated everything myself, which took about 6 months over the course of many lunch breaks and late nights. It really represents so much about me and my music, not only in it’s creative sense but also in how I made it.
Nina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am the multimedia artist known as DEROSNEC, a one-woman music and movie machine.
I am also the owner of Oh Just Peachy Studios Productions, a video production company in Los Angeles which specialises in unique music-related content (such as music videos), concert filming, and short film work.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
It’s my opinion that if you appreciate art and music, that you should support the artists directly whenever possible. If they take commissions, commission them and don’t lowball them. If they sell prints or shirts, buy those things, give them as gifts, and display it. If they make music, subscribe to them on spotify, listen to them, AND buy their music directly from them on Bandcamp if they have it.
It’s only in being able to support ourselves financially that we can continue to bring you that which entertains and inspires you!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have always been singularly focussed on trying to inspire others, even non-artists, to find their creative side and create something. In my mind, creativity is what elevates humanity in any industry – be it art or music, or even science and math. This is where the innovation happens, and it doesn’t happen without actively trying to create.
