We were lucky to catch up with Nina Clifford recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
The most important lesson that I have learned while working in photography is to enjoy every experience as it unfolds. I mostly photograph weddings and young families, which means I am on my toes and creatively following their lead during a session. It is important to step back into the background and try not to control the situation too much. Not only does this help clients become comfortable in front of the camera, but it allows me to capture natural moments as they unfold. This helps me document genuine, beautiful moments that serve as cherished memories.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a natural light photographer that shoots on location. I love capturing real moments that show the love between family members. I started working as a professional photographer in college and just fell in love with the entire process – from coming up with creative ideas and approaches with clients, to editing the images, to building the perfect products that they can keep for a lifetime. I take pride in offering my clients printed products that they can display and cherish for decades.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My photography business is located in a small rural town in Northern California. I think that the best method for building clientele has been word of mouth. I have been able to build a successful business by maintaining good relationships with clients and having customers that are consistently satisfied with their experiences.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal during each photography session is to capture real life moments as they unfold. I try to envision what my subjects’ interactions will translate to in print and consider how their portraits will be displayed as a physical product. This allows me to create beautiful portraits that can be displayed in a client’s home. I majored in Art History in college and I think having a formal art background along with over 15 years of hands on photography experience, has allowed me to translate my talents in digital photography into a successful business that satisfies my clients’ needs.
