We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nina Butterly a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nina, appreciate you joining us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I am someone who loves to express my humor through my clothes. I want peoples first impression of me to be positive. I mean, if you see a small white girl who looked like OshKosh B’gosh threw up on her, you’re more likely to have your guard down right? So naturally I wear a lot of these silly clothing items out and about. Some examples include my handbag that looks like cheese and my tiny croc jibbitz that go atop my crocs. I get stopped a lot, people either complimenting me or asking where I get these items. I thought it would be a good idea to have a one stop shop for these silly items – hence the idea for my store, “Your Butter Half”. Not only is it fashion pieces I design myself but it’s also silly clothing items that I wish to share with others.
Nina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a comedian and actress in Los Angeles, CA. Being a comedian you always have to have a pulse on what’s popular, so for me that also translated to fashion. I could keep an eye on what consumers find interesting and what the current generation really wants from their retailers.
What sets me apart from others is that I believe in fairness. I do not gatekeep where I purchase my product nor do I jack up prices to insane amounts. I believe everyone should get a fair shake in starting their own business. I also love promoting fellow businesses! I am constantly inspired by my peers around me and I wish to improve their popularity as well.
I want to give my customers a fun and easygoing shopping experience. A place where they can find silly goods within America. A big issue I find is that a lot of these fun items tend to be from other countries, so the shipping fee can be high – I like to provide a shopping experience that anyone from any demographic can shop comfortably and find something for them.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Friends! Nothing is better than old fashioned word of mouth. Be it friends on Tiktok or friends in real life – having someone vouch for you does wonders for finding new faces.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to make others happy – whether that be through traditional comedy work or wearing fun outfits. I want to provide a happy and fun space for others to escape within.
