We recently connected with Nils Jiptner and have shared our conversation below.
Nils, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
There are upsides and downsides to being a self-employed independent artist. It can be struggle especially in the beginning, but I would not change a thing. I send a lot of hours working on my craft and my career, but it does not feel like work. It’s what I would do in my free time anyways. Of course I am oversimplifying a bit, since I do have to deal with business aspects well and some clients can be a pain, but for the most part I get up every morning looking forward to doing what I love to do.
Nils, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a producer, my job is to take the artist’s vision and create a viable product. In my case that’s musical recording. I don’t have a cookie cutter approach, because every client is different. Some need help writing a great hook, others need guidance on their performance, most of them need help putting it all together. Many emerging artists come to me due to my success producing hit Billboard singles. I usually start with having an extended conversation with the artist to get en understanding of his abilities , taste and goals. I educate them on the workings of the business ( if necessary), what the revenue streams are and how to optimize the return for their efforts. And beyond one recording project, I also talk to them about how to build a career .
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Create opportunities for artists to perform and come out and support them by buying tickets, downloading their music, etc . If an artist has a website, getting music or merchandise directly from the artist’s site, is usually the most beneficial way to do so for the artist.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I feel blessed every day that I get up and get to do what i love doing. I often work long hours and even weekends, but it doesn’t feel like work. Creating something out of thin air that brings joy to thousands of people is just priceless.
