Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nikole Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nikole , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
When I first began designing glam bottles and wine glasses it was something I was interested in ,but didn’t know where to start. Of course we all turn to YouTube when trying something new, but it really didn’t help with what I was trying to accomplish. At the time I was working as an office manager, every Friday after work I would go to Micheals and purchase crafting supplies. Spending weekend after weekend practicing, I eventually taught myself through trial and error how to perfect my craft.
Knowing what I know now would have saved me a lot of money. When learning through trial and error it can get costly, especially with crafting supplies. Just imaging purchasing several different adhesives because you’re not sure which would work the best, it can get overwhelming so if I knew what I know now I would have definitely saved a lot of money and time.
The most essential skill that helped me was being patient with myself , trusting the process. Too often we compare ourselves to others not realizing that everyone has went through a process to get to where they are. I made it my mission to reach one person a day and be patient with the process and myself.
The number one obstacle was finding time to practice. After working 40+ hours a week, crafting was sometimes the last thing on my mind. I overcame this by assigning “designated designing days” where I spent time specifically and only on crafting. I would completely give all my attention to what I was doing and remembered why I love it so much.
Nikole , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Nikole, I am the owner of Luxury Sips By Nikole which is a black-owned, female-operated business that specializes in customizing sexy stemware and glam bottles.
I began customizing as a hobby, but it quickly turned into a business after receiving so much love. My products are unique and most customers have said they have never seen anything like it. I customize with great attention to detail and great customer service is my #1 priority. I like to call my luxury sets “conversation starters”. I am most proud of being able to provide a unique item for my customers.
These are normally purchased for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, house warnings, etc. so to make someone feel special on their big day is what I’m most proud of.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to share my knowledge/techniques with others. I worked long and hard for 6 months to create the Glam Bottle Master Class. This class is virtual and beginner friendly. I teach crafters how to design both glam bottles and wine glasses from start to finish. I currently have 115 students enrolled and it’s so rewarding to know that they are utilizing my techniques and making money. It’s also amazing that these crafters don’t have to trial and error and waste money/supplies.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Facebook groups have become a big thing for me. I have been an active member of over 50 crafting groups on Facebook for a year now and the support is refreshing!! You’re able to reach people you would have never on other platforms. This sparked my interest in creating my own group called Glam Bottle Crafters , I currently have 115 active members who are either glam bottle artist or wine glass artist. It’s place where we support and motivate each others journey: This is a resource I wish I’d known about earlier
