We were lucky to catch up with Nikolas Wilde recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nikolas, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I’ve been a dancer for as long as I could stand on my own two feet. Even more than that, I have always been a performer. Getting on stage, in front of a live crowd, and putting on a performance, giving them an experience like nothing before is something I’ve dreamt of time and time again. Now my dilemma came in becoming a musician. I’ve always been a creative person and had a thing for music, but never imagined myself to be a rapper or musician. Personally, I didn’t believe I fit the mold. I didn’t look like the typical rapper you would see at the BET awards. I didn’t talk like them. Furthermore, regarding the type of music I would want to write and showcase, I pondered whether people would even entertain it. This hesitation, this reluctance plagued me for some time. Time passed by, and as I continued to write more and more music, I finally decided to take a chance. I took a risk.
I had a music class in high school, and my teacher Ms.Mack was always so open and influential. I remember coming up to her and telling her its something I wanted to share with the class. I had been working on this 16-bars for who knows how long, but I couldn’t;t just sit on my hands anymore. I had to take a leap of faith and see it for myself. She waited until the end of her lecture and decided to give me the floor. As I stood in front of the class, a thousand thoughts ran through my head. Would they like it? Why am I even up here? No one is going to care, or will they? This is a waste of time. However, I took the risk, I took that leap of faith.
I gave it everything I had. I made sure every verse was profound, every punchline was delivered, and let my emotion carry me. Then I stopped. That moment of silence, that pause, what maybe have been fifteen seconds lasted almost fifteen hours in my mind. My anxiety was raging as I eagerly waited for their response. Then it came.
The cheered. The room erupted. They all stood and gave me a standing ovation. I couldn’t believe it. It was then that I understood. I can write the type of music I want to write. I can be the artist I want to be. I don’t have to fit into some industry mold. or pretend to be something I’m not. I can be me. I can be Nikolas Wilde.
Nikolas, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Nikolas Wilde, I am a performer/dancer/rapper from the DMV area. I have been performing for over 4 years now. I started out dancing in church talent shows and worked my way up to the big stage. My goal was to always be different and stand out. Not to be like any other artist or musician, to be someone else. to be something else. Also, I wanted to change live performance entirely. When people see Nikolas Wilde on stage they know that they are in store for a performance like nothing they have ever seen before.
I debuted my first big performance in 2018 to a crowd of almost 100 people to a standing ovation. On that fateful night, Nikolas Wilde was born. I continued performing, innovating my live performances and continuing to captivate audiences. I had the luxury of working with a very good friend and fellow artist Project MC who helped give me a stage early on to perform. As I became more and more comfortable, my ambition grew and I continued to elevate. I began handling my own bookings, pushing my brand and presentation across the DMV area. A year later, I headlined a major artist showcase event at Black Box Theatre. That night, I challenged myself to showcase Nikolas Wilde not only as a dancer and performer but as a musician. After the night was over, I looked across the street to see The Fillmore. I know that the illustrious venue has hosted some of the greatest DMV artists ever. I set a goal that night that I would perform in that venue, and I achieved that goal 6 months later. In front of over 500 people, I performed in The Fillmore in what is to this day my greatest performance.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
For me, my goal has always been to provide a live performance experience unlike any other. At the level I currently am, I feel as though I have achieved that goal. I have given some of the most enigmatic yet entertaining performances people have ever witnessed. However, my ambition is forever hungry. As I continue to grow my brand, and my fanbase, so will my live performances. It will continue to grow, to elevate, and I will continue to think outside the box and deliver performances like no other.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
There’s nothing like having people connect to you and your artistry. When you create something that made someone else feel, a feeling where that resonated with them, or brought some sort of excitement out of them, that is what makes you special. That is what separates you from other artists or creatives. That feeling is so rewarding. It means a lot to me that people can not only appreciate my creativity, and the care I put into my craft, but also connect with it on a deeper level. That’s all I can ever hope and pray for. That’s all I ever need.
