We were lucky to catch up with Nikolas Bentel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nikolas, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I run a small 6 person design studio. There are two parts of the studio. One half is launching our own projects that we care about. The other hald is client based work. How the studio runs was really created on trial and error. Trying different formats of working and creating, understanding what was successful, what resonated with our audience, what best methods of organization to help the studio achieve its goals. The studio is about 7 years old at this point and has had many transitions to where it is now.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello! My name is Nik Bentel and I run Nik Bentel Studio. A six person design studio where we tell stories through objects that are big, small and in between. These stories can range from a story about a physical material, a cultural moment, a meme, the maker who helped us make said object, etc. The primary goal is to use physical objects as storytelling vehicles.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Consistency is one of the best ways to build reputation in your market. Everyone now has the same tools. The computer, the internet and social media have become the great equalizer to being able to create the highest level of production and quality. What would take 20 individuals, one person can create in an afternoon with the right tools. The one thing you can bring to the table is having a consistent brand and output.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The best way we have found to grow our clientele is to produce our own work. 99 percent of the time, clients have reached out to mimic objects that we have already produced. What better way to show that you can confidently make something is to have already made it in a similar flavor. This also helps weed out clients that would might rather not work with. The clients that gravitate to the work you are currently making will be attracted.
