We were lucky to catch up with Nikola Modrusan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nikola thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I have a deep belief that if you build something truly exceptional, people will naturally be drawn to it. My mission is to craft mesmerizing kinetic sculptures that not only serve as artistic expressions but also bring people together to experience the wonder of art in our community.
One of the most significant risks I’ve taken was when I decided to create a large-scale kinetic sculpture called The Super Knebula. I had created a few small prototypes at this point and wanted to go bigger. Standing at 6′ tall, this sculpture was an ambitious project and presented many challenges. I decided to work closely with a high school friend and current business partner John Schopp, sponsoring his senior engineering project at SDSU. With a significant financial and time investment, I pursued this creation solely because I believed in its greatness.
When the sculpture was finally completed a year later, I happened to meet Robert Blume, the owner of Connect San Diego. Immediately we realized how similar our missions were and the Super Knebula found its home at Connect in Ocean Beach. Its presence began to attract attention and spark conversations among the community. Through this installation and social media, we met many creative and influential people along the way, growing our own community.
Quickly we began to get interest in the Super Knebula; it’s first installation was at Lighting In a Bottle only a few months after it was launched at Connect. Since then it has been displayed at two local music events, my wedding, and featured at two of our own events.
The risk we took in creating something exceptional without a set destination paid off in a way I could never have imagined. Our kinetic sculpture not only became a source of wonder but also an emblem of the transformative power of art. It brought people together, fostering a sense of unity and inspiration.
It has become a driving force in my commitment to continue pushing the boundaries of kinetic sculpture and infusing our community with a sense of awe and togetherness through art.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of art and engineering. My journey began with my educational background in mechanical engineering. While studying mechanical engineering at SDSU, I worked as an engineering instructor; teaching elementary and middle school students about physics and engineering using LEGO and robotics. During classes, I found myself constantly tinkering, and creating mechanisms with unique and interesting movements. The students were inspired by my creations and often went on to create their own versions. I began to realize how captivating and transformative my creations were.
As I delved deeper into the world of kinetic art, I realized there was a niche waiting to be explored. That’s when the idea for Knetics was born. I wanted to combine my technical expertise with my passion for art to create unique, captivating kinetic sculptures. These sculptures are not just inanimate objects; they come to life, constantly in motion, offering viewers an ever-changing visual experience.
At Knetics, we provide a range of kinetic sculptures that are meticulously designed and handcrafted. These sculptures are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional pieces of art. They can be used for interior décor, public installations, or even as centerpieces for events and exhibitions.
One of the primary problems we solve for our clients is the creation of interactive and dynamic spaces. Our kinetic sculptures have the power to transform any environment, adding a sense of wonder and engagement. They stimulate curiosity, spark conversations, and breathe life into spaces that may otherwise feel static.
What sets Knetics apart is our dedication to precision engineering and innovation. We meticulously design and craft each sculpture to ensure it operates flawlessly. Our team collaborates closely with clients to understand their vision and create customized kinetic installations that exceed their expectations.
To potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that Knetics is not just a company; it’s a passion-driven endeavor. We’re here to create experiences that leave a lasting impression. We invite you to explore the mesmerizing world of kinetic art, to witness the beauty of machinery in motion, and to join us in redefining the boundaries between art and engineering. With Knetics, you’re not just acquiring a sculpture; you’re bringing a captivating story to life. We believe there is creativity in motion.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I find immense joy in witnessing people interact with my art and experiencing the dynamic energy they infuse into any space. For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and a creative visionary is the profound impact my work has on people and the communities they inhabit.
Watching people engage with my kinetic sculptures is a truly magical experience. The sculptures have a unique ability to draw people in and captivate their imagination. Whether it’s a bustling music festival, a serene park, or a quiet gallery, the sculptures have an uncanny ability to transform any environment into a vibrant and interactive hub of energy.
The joy comes from observing how my creations inspire connections and conversations among individuals. People are naturally drawn to the movement and beauty of the sculptures. They stop in their tracks, they start conversations with strangers, and they share the moment with friends and family. It’s heartwarming to see the sense of wonder and awe on their faces, especially when they realize they are a part of this living art form.
The most rewarding part, without a doubt, is the sense of unity that my kinetic sculptures foster within a community. Art has the power to break down barriers, foster connections, and bring people from diverse backgrounds together. When people come together to appreciate and engage with my art, it transcends language, culture, and differences, promoting a shared experience that unites them in a way that few other things can.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In order to foster a thriving creative ecosystem and support artists and creatives, it is crucial for society to actively engage in artistic endeavors and seek art in their community. By participating in and dedicating moments to appreciate art, individuals not only enrich their own lives but also contribute to the sustainability of the creative community. This involvement ensures that artists receive the recognition and encouragement they need to continue producing valuable contributions to culture.
